Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Mr Shah,

I am writing this letter in regard to our lease and license agreement which we had signed befoer taking the keys of this apartment. I rented out this apartment for 6months knowing that my office assignment will be completey within 6months which was planned initially looking to the project estimation.

As you know, I am coming from Delhi for this project for 6 months and reecdntly learn't from yesterday's meeting that there are some amendments to be done for ongoing projetcs as required by our customer inturn which is more time consuming and therofere, I am not sure when this will be completed. Hence, I request you to extend my lease agreement for another 6 months to be on the safer side.

Moreover, I would like to highlight you that since last couple of days, I have noticed the leakage issue in bathroom which might be due to some loose connection at the joints. If you don't mind then can you please arrange a good plumber who can fix this problem? If not, then I will manage from my end and will send the invoice against that repair. Hope you will agree in this case.

I look forwad for your positive reply on my rent agreement extension so as to inform my office management accordingly. Also please confirm on repair work for leakage.

Thanking you.

Kind regards,

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The letter clearly addresses all three requirements. You request a specific extension—“another 6 months”—and explain that the project has been extended because the customer requested amendments. You also identify the bathroom leak and ask the owner to arrange a plumber, while offering to pay and send the invoice if necessary. These details make your purpose clear and the tone is appropriately polite. The explanation for the changed plans is relevant, though it could be expressed more directly and the repair request could specify when you first noticed the leak or how urgently it needs attention. Overall, the key ideas are extended and supported, with a clear request throughout; more precise development would make the letter even more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter has a clear progression: it introduces the rental agreement, explains why you need to stay longer, raises the maintenance issue, and closes by requesting a reply. Paragraphing supports this sequence, and linking expressions such as “Hence,” “Moreover,” and “Also” help connect the points. The reader can follow the message without difficulty. Some transitions are slightly mechanical, however, and the opening sentence contains several details before the main request is stated. The final paragraph also repeats the request for confirmation rather than adding a distinct closing point. To strengthen the flow, state the extension request earlier and use simpler links where the relationship between ideas is already clear.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a formal rental letter, including “lease agreement,” “amendments,” “ongoing projects,” “leakage issue,” and “invoice.” These choices communicate the main points, and the tone is generally suitable. However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “in regard to our lease and license agreement,” “looking to the project estimation,” and “highlight you that.” There are also spelling errors, including “befoer,” “completely,” and “look forwad,” which reduce the accuracy of the vocabulary. Aim for familiar, precise expressions rather than overly formal phrasing—for example, “regarding our rental agreement” and “inform you about a leak.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response includes a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a reason clause (“knowing that my office assignment…”) and conditional phrasing (“If you don’t mind…”). Most meaning remains clear, but some grammatical errors occur. For example, “I rented out this apartment” uses a verb form that does not express your role as the tenant, and “I am not sure when this will be completed” shifts awkwardly from the earlier past report. The sentence beginning “I look forwad for your positive reply” also has an incorrect grammatical pattern; use “I look forward to your reply.” Review articles, verb forms, and sentence construction, and break up long sentences where several ideas are joined. This would improve accuracy while preserving your range.
