Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Aman,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to get my six month agreement expanded to one year agreement. As my previous agreement is expiring on 23rd October 2026, i would like to take it forward till 23rd October 2027.

There is a sudden change in my plan because i have decided to continue my further studies from Chitkara University which is near to your appartment. Moreover, there are high chances of getting placement nearby which will be more accessible for travelling.

However, there are some issues in the appartment which i want you to look forward to them. As sometimes , kitchen lights fluctuates which feels unsafe during night. In addition, heating system is not working properly which needs to be inspected as winters are on its way. Therefore, i request you to extend my agreement and find a quick and pocket friendly solution to my problems.

Looking forward for your response.

Yours Faithfully,

Ishika Tandon.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

You address all three points clearly: you request an extension until 23 October 2027, explain that you plan to study at Chitkara University and may find work nearby, and report problems with the kitchen lights and heating. The purpose and requested action are clear throughout, and the reasons are relevant to the owner. The study and possible-placement explanation gives useful support, although the placement is presented as a possibility rather than developed further. The repair request is also clear, but “a quick and pocket friendly solution” could be more specific about what you expect the owner to arrange. Overall, the letter fulfils the task well; fuller detail on the practical arrangements would make the ideas more completely developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter follows a clear sequence: the extension request and dates come first, your changed plans follow, and the apartment problems and closing request appear in the final paragraph. Paragraphing helps the reader distinguish these points, while connectors such as “Moreover,” “In addition,” and “Therefore” show how the ideas relate. The progression is easy to follow, though some linking is slightly mechanical: “However” does not clearly signal a contrast before the list of problems, and the final paragraph combines the repair issues with the extension request. A more natural transition and a separate sentence or paragraph for the requested repairs would make the cohesion more flexible and polished.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

Your vocabulary is adequate for the purpose and includes relevant terms such as “agreement,” “placement,” “heating system,” and “inspected.” The reader can understand both your plans and the maintenance concerns. However, several choices or collocations are imprecise: “agreement expanded” is less natural than “extend my rental agreement,” and “look forward to them” does not convey that you want the owner to address the issues. “Pocket friendly solution” is also informal for a letter to a landlord, while “appartment” is misspelled. These examples show attempts to express the situation clearly, but more accurate collocations and a consistently appropriate register would improve precision.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and more complex forms, including the reason clause “because I have decided to continue…” and the time clause “As sometimes, kitchen lights fluctuates…”. The main message remains understandable, but some errors in sentence structure, agreement, articles, and punctuation reduce accuracy. For example, “lights fluctuates” should have a plural verb, and “a one year agreement” needs a more accurate article and hyphenated compound modifier. The opening sentence also needs a clearer grammatical construction for requesting an extension. Capitalisation of “I” and punctuation around introductory phrases need attention. More consistently accurate sentence patterns, alongside your existing attempts at complex sentences, would strengthen control.
