IELTS Writing Task 1 question

Five months ago, you started renting an apartment on a six-month agreement. You now wish to stay in the apartment for longer than the six months you originally agreed with the owner.

Write a letter to the owner of your apartment. In your letter

  • say how long you now want to rent the apartment for
  • explain why your plans have changed
  • tell the owner about a problem in the apartment

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir,

When the agreement was signed for six months, I started my job role as a part of 6 months contract. Currently, I am willing to rent the apartment for another 1 year.

The plans have changed since I got a job contract extension for one more year. Moreover, the grocery store, supermarket and so on are at shorter distances from the apartment. The final advantage is the short distance via bus transit route. This contributes a lot since my job duties cover plant's emergency visits. These factors significantly favours the current residential location.

The apartment is spacious but does not cover important household commodities such as Dinning table, closet, shoe rack and so on. Internet access is vulnerable at times. It would be good to change the service data package to get a steady network. With these changes, I am fine with hike in the monthly rent.

Yours Sincerely,

Yash Mehta.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You address all three required points: you request a further year, explain that your employment contract has been extended, and report issues with household items and unreliable internet. Your reasons for staying are relevant and supported with practical details, including nearby shops and convenient bus access for emergency work visits. The request to accept a rent increase also makes your position clear. To strengthen the letter further, make the apartment problem more precise: it is unclear whether the listed items are missing and need to be supplied, and the internet suggestion could be framed as a specific request for the owner to arrange a service change. Overall, the purpose and key information are clear and developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter follows a sensible sequence: the proposed rental extension comes first, reasons for the change follow, and the apartment concerns appear in the final body paragraph. Paragraphing helps the reader distinguish these functions, and links such as “Moreover” and “The final advantage” show an effort to connect supporting points. However, the progression within the reasons paragraph is somewhat list-like, and “These factors” refers broadly to several different details. The final paragraph also moves quickly from missing furnishings to internet reliability and then to rent. Use clearer transitions and make each paragraph’s central point more explicit to achieve smoother, more flexible cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range for the letter and convey the main ideas clearly, with phrases such as “contract extension,” “emergency visits,” and “steady network.” There are also attempts at more formal or specific language, including “residential location” and “monthly rent.” Some choices are inaccurate or unnatural, however: “job role as a part of 6 months contract,” “shorter distances,” and “service data package” do not express the intended meanings naturally. “Dinning” is also misspelled, and “hike” is an awkward choice for a rent increase. Aim for common, precise collocations rather than formal-sounding phrases; this will make the letter more fluent without requiring more complex vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple sentences and more complex forms, including the conditional-style request “It would be good to change…” and the reason clause “since my job duties cover…”. Most sentences remain understandable, and punctuation generally supports the meaning. Some grammatical inaccuracies persist, such as “When the agreement was signed for six months” (an unclear construction), “as a part of 6 months contract” (missing an article), and “These factors significantly favours” (subject–verb disagreement). The sentence about the bus route is also a fragment: “The final advantage is the short distance via bus transit route.” Work on complete sentence structures, articles, and agreement, while retaining the range of sentence forms already attempted.
