Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir,

I am writing with regards to request you to extend our stay in your rental property more than the agreement notice. As per my requirement, I would like you to expand our stay at least for a year.

There are new changes occured at my workplace in which they are going to postpones my transfer about six months. Therefore, it makes me to stay at same location for more than a six months. In this case, I could request you kindly make a new renting agreement this me if possible.

I would like to put your attention on the things need to take into consideration at this property such as the water pipes need to repaired, some kitchen applicianes required to change due to problems they are creating while their usage. I would really appriciate if you could understand my situation and accept my request.

I look forward to hearing back from you.

Yours faithfully,

Bhagwant Kaur.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three required points: you request an extension, explain that a workplace transfer has been postponed, and report problems with the pipes and kitchen appliances. The request for “at least for a year” gives the owner a clear proposed rental period, and the reason is relevant. The problem report is also specific enough to identify what needs attention. However, the duration is not fully clear: it would help to state whether you mean one year from the end of the current agreement or one year in total. The maintenance issues are mentioned but not explained in detail, and the request for a new agreement could be stated more directly. These details would make the letter more fully developed and precise.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a clear overall arrangement: the opening makes the request, the next paragraph explains the changed plans, and the following paragraph raises maintenance concerns before a polite closing. This gives the reader a generally logical progression. Linking expressions such as “Therefore” and “In this case” help connect the explanation to the request, although the latter is somewhat mechanical and the relationship between the ideas could be smoother. The maintenance concerns are grouped appropriately, but the sentence combines two separate problems in a way that makes the information harder to follow. Use clearer transitions and separate the pipe issue from the appliance issue into distinct sentences. This would make the organisation more fluent and the connections between points more precise.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a range of vocabulary relevant to a formal rental letter, including “rental property,” “transfer,” “renting agreement,” and “appliances.” The meaning is generally recoverable, but several noticeable word-choice, collocation, and spelling errors reduce precision: “with regards to request,” “expand our stay,” “put your attention,” “applicianes,” and “appriciate.” Some phrases sound unnatural for this context, particularly “make a new renting agreement this me.” Aim for conventional formal expressions and check spelling carefully; for example, request an extension, draw attention to a problem, and arrange a new rental agreement. More accurate collocations would make your vocabulary sound more natural and help the owner understand the request immediately.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including a reason clause beginning “There are new changes…” and a conditional request with “if possible.” The main message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors affect clarity and control. For example, “they are going to postpones” has an incorrect verb form, while “it makes me to stay” uses an incorrect infinitive pattern. There are also issues with articles and prepositions in “at same location” and “more than a six months.” The sentence about the pipes and appliances is difficult to parse because its clauses are not joined clearly. Review verb patterns, singular and plural forms, and sentence boundaries; more consistently accurate complex sentences would strengthen the letter.
