Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Mr.John,
I am writing this letter to ask if I could extend my rental agreement for another six months.I am planning to study part time in healthcare. I think it is a good profession. Now,I am also working in this sector. So, I have a lot of knowledge about it. Morever, my university is also near my apartment. Its just a five-minute drive from apartment. However, I would also inform about a noise problem that I have been experiencing recently in this apartment. It effects my sleep. I am doing job so I have to wake up early in the morning. Due to excessive noise, I do not sleep properly. As a result, I cannot concentrate on my tasks. I would request you to ask my neighbour to keep the noise down. I would appreciate it if you could extend my rental contract for another six months. I look forward to hearing from you. Thank you for your consideration.
Yours faithfully,
Arshdeep Kaur.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You address all three required points clearly: you request a further six months, explain that you plan to study healthcare and that your university is nearby, and describe noise that affects your sleep and work. The request is clear and supported with relevant reasons, while the problem is explained through its effects on your concentration. To make the ideas more fully developed, clarify why your study plans have changed since you began renting, and give a little more detail about the noise, such as when it occurs or how long it has been happening. Overall, the letter maintains a clear purpose and responds appropriately to the owner.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The information follows a generally understandable order: you make the extension request, explain your circumstances, raise the noise issue, and close politely. However, the letter is presented as one continuous paragraph, so the two main topics—the extension and the apartment problem—are not visually separated. Some links also feel mechanical, particularly the repeated use of “So,” “However,” and “As a result.” The transition from your study plans to the noise complaint could be smoother, and “I would also inform about” does not clearly signal the purpose of the next point. Use separate paragraphs and more natural transitions to make the progression easier to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
Your vocabulary is adequate for the purpose and communicates the main points, with useful phrases such as “extend my rental agreement,” “excessive noise,” and “concentrate on my tasks.” There are, however, some inaccurate or awkward choices that reduce naturalness: “inform about a noise problem” is not idiomatic, and “It effects my sleep” uses the wrong form of the word. “Good profession” is also rather general, while “Morever” is misspelled. Aim for precise, natural collocations suited to a formal letter, and proofread spelling carefully. These issues do not prevent the reader from understanding your request or complaint.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and more developed sentence forms, including the cause-and-effect construction “Due to excessive noise, I do not sleep properly. As a result, I cannot concentrate on my tasks.” Most of the message remains understandable, but some grammatical and punctuation errors are present. For example, “Its just a five-minute drive from apartment” needs an apostrophe and an article, and “I would also inform about” is not a well-formed sentence pattern. Several sentences run together because spaces are missing after full stops, as in “six months.I am” and “Now,I am.” Check articles, sentence boundaries, and punctuation to improve accuracy while retaining your clear meaning.
