IELTS Writing Task 1 question

Five months ago, you started renting an apartment on a six-month agreement. You now wish to stay in the apartment for longer than the six months you originally agreed with the owner.

Write a letter to the owner of your apartment. In your letter

  • say how long you now want to rent the apartment for
  • explain why your plans have changed
  • tell the owner about a problem in the apartment

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Hiren,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to show my interest for living in your apartment for more than six months.

I am quite enjoying living here and planning to reside here for another six months till April.

Actually, I was about to migrate to another location near my workplace. I was trying hard to get my dream job placement in google company and planned to shift nearby. In fact, I got my posting near to my current place. Therefore, I have changed my mind to stay here for longer.

As I will continue to live here, I would like to address one problem that I am facing. In my living room there is no vent, which is harder for me to get heat and air-conditioning in the room where I mostly needed.

I am requesting you to fix this problem at your earliest convenience.

Thankfully,

Khushpreet

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You address all three required points and maintain a clear, polite purpose: you want to remain for another six months, explain that your job plans have changed, and report a problem with the living room. The explanation that you received a posting near your current home makes the change understandable, and the request to fix the ventilation issue is clear. To make the response more fully developed, clarify the exact end date or duration in relation to the original agreement, and explain more precisely how the lack of a vent affects heating or air-conditioning. A more conventional closing would also suit a formal letter to a landlord.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a clear overall sequence: opening purpose, explanation of your changed plans, then the apartment problem and a request for action. Paragraphing helps distinguish these points, and links such as “Therefore” and “As I will continue to live here” guide the reader. The progression is generally easy to follow, though some connections are a little mechanical, and “Actually” followed by “In fact” repeats a similar transition. The relationship between the job posting and the decision to stay could be stated more directly. For stronger cohesion, use fewer repeated signposts and connect the reason and outcome in a smoother sentence.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

Your vocabulary is adequate for the purpose, and phrases such as “six-month agreement,” “posting,” and “at your earliest convenience” help communicate the situation and request. You also attempt more formal wording, but some choices are inaccurate or unnatural: “show my interest for living” and “get my dream job placement in google company” do not sound idiomatic, while “vent” may not clearly describe the ventilation problem you mean. These choices do not prevent understanding, but they limit precision and naturalness. Prefer straightforward, accurate expressions such as “request an extension,” “was offered a position,” and “there is no ventilation in the living room.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentences, including “I was trying hard to get my dream job placement … and planned to shift nearby” and the conditional-style opening “As I will continue to live here…”. Most of the message remains understandable, and the sentence boundaries are generally clear. Some grammatical patterns need more control: “I am quite enjoying living here and planning” omits a subject and auxiliary in the second clause, and “where I mostly needed” has an unclear tense and clause structure. The phrase “for another six months till April” also needs a clearer time construction. Check that each coordinated clause has a complete verb phrase and keep tense choices consistent.
