IELTS Writing Task 1 question
Five months ago, you started renting an apartment on a six-month agreement. You now wish to stay in the apartment for longer than the six months you originally agreed with the owner.
Write a letter to the owner of your apartment. In your letter
- say how long you now want to rent the apartment for
- explain why your plans have changed
- tell the owner about a problem in the apartment
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear sir or madam,
I am writing this letter to inform you that I would to extend my lease for the flat I previously rented for a fixed period of six months.
In the agreement, it was clearly stated that you can prolong your stay if notified to the landloard before two months of lease ending, and if requirments matched then your application can be approved. Therefore, I would like to continue accomode in this magnificent apartment for another six months.
The reason for changing the plan is because I have to repeat my final semester to achieve more higher grades. Therefore, it would be worthless moving to a different place for accommodation, as after graduating, I am moving to another city. Moreover, I really like this place, rent is affordable and the view is breathtaking from my room, and my university is also walking distance away.
However, there is one significant isuue that I would like you to take care of it. During night time, I can hear loud noises coming from next door and it is extremely hard for me to sleep due to that.
Please consider my application, I look forward to receiving your response.
Yours faithfully

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
The letter addresses all three requirements clearly: you request a further six months, explain that you need to repeat your final semester and expect to move after graduating, and report noise from the neighbouring apartment. The reasons for staying are supported with relevant details, including the affordable rent, the view and the university’s proximity. The request and closing are also appropriately clear. To make the response more fully developed, specify the exact date or month when the extension would begin, and make the requested action about the noise more precise—for example, ask the owner to contact the neighbour or investigate the disturbance. Overall, the purpose and position remain clear throughout, with only these details left somewhat general.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The information follows a clear, useful sequence: you introduce the extension request, explain the agreement and your reasons, raise the apartment problem, and close politely. Paragraphing helps distinguish these points, while connectors such as “Therefore” and “Moreover” make the relationships between ideas easy to follow. Some linking is a little mechanical: “Therefore” appears to introduce both the extension request and the explanation of your plans, and the second use does not express the relationship as precisely as it could. The transition into the noise complaint is clear, but the request for action could be connected more directly to the problem. More varied, precise transitions and slightly smoother links between sentences would strengthen the otherwise logical progression.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range for a formal letter, including relevant terms such as “lease,” “fixed period,” “affordable,” and “breathtaking.” These choices communicate the situation and your reasons effectively, and the tone is generally suitable. However, several spelling and word-choice errors reduce precision: “landloard,” “requirments,” “accomode,” and “isuue” should be corrected, while “repeat my final semester” and “more higher grades” are not natural expressions in this context. “Continue accomode” also does not convey the intended meaning clearly. Aim to use accurate, natural collocations rather than reaching for less familiar wording; proofreading spelling and checking phrases in context would make the vocabulary more controlled.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
The letter includes a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including the conditional structure “if notified … and if requirements matched” and the explanation beginning “as after graduating.” Most meaning remains clear, and the longer sentences allow you to connect reasons and details. Some grammatical errors remain, however. In “I would to extend,” the verb pattern requires “would like to extend”; “you can prolong your stay” shifts perspective from the writer to the owner; and “it would be worthless moving” needs a more suitable construction, such as “it would not make sense to move.” The phrase “take care of it” also has an unnecessary object after “take care of.” Review verb patterns, pronoun perspective and sentence construction to improve accuracy while retaining this range.
