IELTS Writing Task 1 question
Five months ago, you started renting an apartment on a six-month agreement. You now wish to stay in the apartment for longer than the six months you originally agreed with the owner.
Write a letter to the owner of your apartment. In your letter
- say how long you now want to rent the apartment for
- explain why your plans have changed
- tell the owner about a problem in the apartment
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Mr Felix,
I hope you are doing good Sir, and thanks for the other day, I appreciate the kind gesture. I have really enjoyed my stay in my rented apartment and I believe it will be a good idea to extend my tenancy agreement to 1 year as I find the atmosphere calm.
I know that, this was not part of our initial agreement but I just enrolled for masters degree in the same college where I just completed my first degree, therefore it will be easier for me to commute to school since it is closer to the train station from my home.
Although I would like you to address the loud noise coming from my neigbours apartment at exactly 11pm when I am about to sleep for the day, that's when he plays the loud music and I have communicated to him several times but the issue still persists.
I look forward to your response. Do have a great day Sir.
Yours faithfully,
Best Luck

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address all three required points: you request an extension, explain that you have begun a master’s degree nearby, and describe the neighbour’s late-night music. The request to extend the tenancy “to 1 year” is clear, and the study-related reason is relevant. This meets the task well, with some elements more fully covered than others: the problem is specific about its timing and your attempts to resolve it, while the requested extension could be clearer about whether you mean one year in total or one additional year. The opening and closing are polite, though “Best Luck” is not an appropriate sign-off. Clarifying the exact end date and making the request more direct would strengthen the letter further.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The letter follows a sensible overall sequence: a polite opening and extension request, an explanation of your changed plans, the apartment problem, and a closing. Paragraphing helps distinguish the main points, and linking words such as “therefore” and “Although” show how ideas relate. However, some connections are not fully clear. For example, “it will be easier for me to commute … since it is closer to the train station from my home” leaves the reference of “it” uncertain and does not clearly explain how the apartment’s location supports the study plan. The first paragraph also combines thanks, enjoyment of the apartment, and the request. Organising each purpose more distinctly and using clearer references would make the progression smoother.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the letter, including relevant terms such as “tenancy agreement,” “commute,” “atmosphere,” and “persists.” These help communicate the request and the noise complaint. There are, however, some word-choice and collocation issues that make parts sound less natural: “doing good” would usually be “doing well,” and “plays the loud music” is more naturally expressed as “plays loud music.” “Best Luck” is also unsuitable as a letter closing; “Best wishes” or “Yours sincerely” would fit better. The spelling “neigbours” should be corrected to “neighbour’s.” More precise, natural phrasing would improve the overall control of vocabulary.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including the subordinate clauses in “as I find the atmosphere calm” and “when I am about to sleep.” The main message remains clear, but some grammatical and punctuation errors persist. In “I hope you are doing good Sir,” the adverb form should be “well,” and “Sir” needs clearer punctuation or can be omitted. The phrase “I just enrolled for masters degree” needs an article and a more suitable preposition, such as “I have just enrolled in a master’s degree.” The comma after “I know that” is unnecessary, and the long sentence beginning “Although I would like you…” would be clearer if divided or restructured. Proofreading these patterns would improve accuracy.
