IELTS Writing Task 1 question

Five months ago, you started renting an apartment on a six-month agreement. You now wish to stay in the apartment for longer than the six months you originally agreed with the owner.

Write a letter to the owner of your apartment. In your letter

  • say how long you now want to rent the apartment for
  • explain why your plans have changed
  • tell the owner about a problem in the apartment

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Mr. Rodriguez,

I am writing this letter to request a new contract agreement if its possible on renting at this apartment I currently reside. In which the six-month contract agreement is going to be expired in about a few weeks.

I wanted you to know that now I wish to stay longer here more than six months, for about a year or two because my employer gave me a fixed position now at the company where it is much closer here at the apartment. And initially made me love the apartment more because of the vibes that the apartment has and also the friendly neighbors around the area.

There is a slight problem which is the noise around my unit when its in evening has taken a toll to my mental health, they are so noisy playing loud music and television. So I wanted a change of policy at our apartment so everyone can abide the rules for noise pollution in the evening. I hope everyone understand that I am not the only one that is tired everytime that I come home at work with loud irritating sound that I hear at neighbors.

Thank you for considering my request on renewing my apartment contract. Looking forward from your response.

Yours Sincerly,

Julian Mari Kilayko

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three required points: you request a longer stay, explain that your employer has given you a fixed position nearby, and describe evening noise from neighbours. Your preferred extension is partly clear in “about a year or two,” but this gives a broad range rather than a definite rental period; state one duration and whether it begins after the current agreement ends. The reason for staying is relevant, and your positive comments about the apartment and neighbours add context, though they could be more directly connected to your decision. The noise issue is clear, but asking for a “change of policy” is less specific than requesting a practical response, such as enforcing quiet hours. Overall, the task is covered, with some points less fully developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a clear overall shape: the opening requests a contract extension, the next paragraph explains your plans, and the final main paragraph raises the noise problem before you close politely. This logical sequencing makes the purpose easy to follow. You also use linking expressions such as “because,” “And initially,” and “So,” although some connections feel mechanical or unclear. For example, “And initially made me love the apartment more” does not clearly connect to the previous sentence, and “So I wanted a change of policy” moves quickly from describing the noise to proposing a solution. Use complete, clearly linked sentences and make the relationship between each reason and request explicit. The paragraphing is appropriate, but referencing and transitions need more consistent control.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

Your vocabulary is adequate for the letter and includes relevant expressions such as “fixed position,” “friendly neighbors,” and “loud music and television.” You also attempt more specific language with “taken a toll to my mental health,” but the phrase is not used naturally in this context; “has affected my sleep and wellbeing” would be clearer and more precise. Several word choices and collocations reduce naturalness, including “new contract agreement,” “vibes,” and “change of policy at our apartment.” Prefer conventional rental language such as “renew the tenancy,” and describe the noise as a disturbance or request that quiet hours be enforced. “Sincerly” is also misspelled. These issues do not prevent understanding, but more accurate collocations and a consistently appropriate formal tone would strengthen the letter.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including explanations with “because” and a relative clause in “the company where it is much closer here at the apartment.” The main message remains understandable, but some sentence structures are incomplete or awkward. “In which the six-month contract agreement is going to be expired” is a fragment, and “And initially made me love the apartment more” lacks a clear subject. There are also errors in forms and agreement, as in “when its in evening” and “I hope everyone understand.” Punctuation and sentence boundaries need attention, particularly where ideas are joined with “So” or “And.” Practise forming complete sentences and checking verb agreement, articles, and apostrophes; this will make your varied sentence attempts more controlled.
