IELTS Writing Task 1 question
Five months ago, you started renting an apartment on a six-month agreement. You now wish to stay in the apartment for longer than the six months you originally agreed with the owner.
Write a letter to the owner of your apartment. In your letter
- say how long you now want to rent the apartment for
- explain why your plans have changed
- tell the owner about a problem in the apartment
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Tom,
I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to request you to extend my renting agreement for six more months.
I started living here six months back on an agreement, but now I wish to extend my stay for six more months. I find this locality safe and secure. No one can enter in this society without permission. In addition, all the aminities are nearby which helps me to manage my time and the rent is not high as compare to the other places.
As you know I am a part-time student and recently I found a new job in a company which is close to this house. This will help me to manage my time and easy for me to commute, so that I can focus on work and study both.
Although, everything is well maintained in this apartment, but their are few things which need to be changed. The washroom with ledge is broken which can open on its own with wind.
I hope you will consider my request. Looking forward for your reply.
Yours Sincerely,
Shagun sharma

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The letter addresses all three required points and maintains a clear, polite request. You specify that you want to stay for “six more months,” explain the change through your new job near the apartment and your studies, and report a problem with the washroom window or ledge. These details make the purpose clear, and the reasons for staying are relevant. The explanation of the apartment problem is less fully developed: “which can open on its own with wind” leaves the exact faulty part and any resulting concern somewhat unclear. To strengthen the response further, describe precisely what is broken and briefly explain how it affects you, while keeping the request and supporting reasons as clear as they are here.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter follows a sensible sequence: request, reasons for staying, explanation of changed plans, apartment problem, and closing. Paragraphing helps distinguish these points, and links such as “In addition” and “As you know” guide the reader through the information. The overall progression is clear, but some connections are mechanical or awkward. For example, “Although, everything is well maintained … but” uses two contrasting signals together, and the final problem sentence is difficult to follow. The reference in “which can open on its own” is also not fully clear. Use one linking structure at a time and make the subject of each sentence explicit to achieve smoother cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use enough vocabulary to communicate the main points, including “extend,” “locality,” “commute,” and “well maintained.” However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, which limits precision. “Six months back” is less suitable than “six months ago,” “all the aminities” contains a spelling error and would be more naturally expressed as “all the amenities,” and “the rent is not high as compare to” is awkward. “The washroom with ledge” also does not identify the faulty item clearly. Aim for accurate, natural phrases rather than adding vocabulary that does not fit the context; this will make the letter sound more fluent and professional.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response includes a mix of simple and more complex sentences, such as the explanation beginning “As you know” and the sentence about the nearby job. Most meaning remains understandable, but some grammatical errors affect clarity. In “I am writing this letter to request you to extend,” the verb pattern should be “request that you extend” or “ask you to extend.” The sentence “Although, everything is well maintained … but their are few things” has faulty punctuation and combines incompatible structures; use “Although everything is well maintained, there are a few things…” There are also errors in “as compare to” and “which can open on its own with wind.” Review verb patterns, agreement, and sentence construction, while continuing to use varied sentence forms.
