IELTS Writing Task 1 question

Five months ago, you started renting an apartment on a six-month agreement. You now wish to stay in the apartment for longer than the six months you originally agreed with the owner.

Write a letter to the owner of your apartment. In your letter

  • say how long you now want to rent the apartment for
  • explain why your plans have changed
  • tell the owner about a problem in the apartment

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Taylor,

The intend of this correspondence is to bring your attention to this matter. Actually, I signed a six month lease for my appartment, but I would love to extend my six-month agreement If possible.

Regarding this point, I would love to highlight a few important observations. Five months ago, I rented your place to finish my educational course. I am doing great in my educational course, because of that I decided to go forward with one more course for my career. Moreover, I want to extend my lease to 12 month of total agreement.

Furthurmore, I wanted to go to states for my study for my better future. Unfortunately, they rejected my application for management course. Recently I got to know that my current college is offering a same course for six month of length. On top of that, my all friends are going for that course I am eagrely to join them.

That would be immensely great if you repair sink leaking problem from the bathroom. To resolve this matter satisfactorily, I would like you to come and have a look of washroom and arrange plumber visit as soon as possible.

I extend my appericiation for your consideration and I anticipate your valued response at your earliest convenience.

Yours Sincerely,

Maitri Bavarva

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You address all three required points and maintain a clear, polite request throughout. You specify that you want a 12-month total agreement, explain that your plans changed after your overseas study application was rejected and your college offered a similar course, and report the leaking bathroom sink while asking for a plumber. These details make the purpose clear and support your request. To make the response more fully developed, clarify whether you mean 12 months in total or 12 additional months, since “extend my lease to 12 month of total agreement” could be interpreted either way. The explanation of your changed plans is relevant, but could connect more directly to how long you now expect to remain in the apartment.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a clear overall arrangement: it introduces the extension request, explains the change in study plans, raises the repair issue, and closes politely. Paragraphing helps the reader distinguish these purposes, and connectors such as “Moreover,” “Unfortunately,” and “On top of that” show relationships between ideas. This gives the response a coherent progression. However, some linking phrases feel formulaic or are used where a simpler transition would be clearer, particularly “Regarding this point” and “Furthurmore.” The study explanation also shifts from the rejected application to the local course and friends without a fully smooth connection. More direct transitions and clearer links between the reasons would make cohesion more flexible and natural.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a formal rental letter, including “extend my lease,” “application,” “management course,” and “repair” to communicate the main points. There are also attempts at more formal expressions, such as “I extend my appreciation” and “at your earliest convenience.” However, several choices are inaccurate or unnatural, including “The intend of this correspondence,” “finish my educational course,” and “have a look of washroom.” Spelling errors such as “appartment,” “Furthurmore,” “eagrely,” and “appericiation” also reduce accuracy. Aim for precise, natural collocations rather than overly formal phrases; this will make the letter sound more fluent while preserving its polite tone.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, and the main message remains understandable. For example, “I am doing great in my educational course, because of that I decided to go forward with one more course” attempts to connect a reason and result, while the repair request uses a clear conditional structure. Some grammatical errors remain, however. In “I signed a six month lease,” the compound adjective needs a hyphen, and “12 month of total agreement” needs a plural form and a clearer construction. “They rejected my application for management course” is missing an article, while “my all friends are going” has incorrect word order. Review articles, plurals, and sentence boundaries, and use punctuation to separate linked clauses more accurately.
