IELTS Writing Task 1 question

Five months ago, you started renting an apartment on a six-month agreement. You now wish to stay in the apartment for longer than the six months you originally agreed with the owner.

Write a letter to the owner of your apartment. In your letter

  • say how long you now want to rent the apartment for
  • explain why your plans have changed
  • tell the owner about a problem in the apartment

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Sir,

I hope you are well. I am writing in connection with the apartment I have been renting from you for the past five months under a six-months agreement. As my current contract is nearing its end, I would like to request an extension of the rental period. Ideally, I would like to continue renting the arpartment for a further twelve months.

My plans have changed due to a new work agreement. I have recently been offered a longer-term position in this city, which means I will no longer need to relocate as originally expected. As a result, remaining in the apartment would be the most convenient and practical option for me. I have been very comfortable and practical option for me. I have been very comfortable here and would prefer to avoid the disruption of moving again.

I would also like to inform you about a minor issue in the apratment. The kitchen sink has been leaking slightly for the past few weeks, and despite my efforts, the problem seems to be getting worse. I would appreciate it if this could be looked into at your covenience.

Thank you for considering my request. I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Yours faithfully,

Dhrumil

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 8.0

The letter covers all three required points clearly and appropriately. You request a specific extension—“a further twelve months”—explain the change through a longer-term job offer, and identify the leaking kitchen sink while asking the owner to arrange attention. The explanation is relevant and supported by the practical reason that staying avoids another move. Your polite, formal tone suits a letter to a landlord, and the request is clear throughout. To make the response even more complete, you could briefly indicate when the extension would begin or acknowledge that you are open to discussing the arrangement. Overall, the purpose is fully achieved, with only a small opportunity to make the proposed terms more precise.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5

The information is arranged in a clear sequence: you introduce the rental request, explain why your plans changed, report the maintenance issue, and close politely. Paragraphing supports this progression, and linking phrases such as “As a result” and “I would also like to inform you” help the reader follow the shift between points. The letter is easy to understand overall. However, the repeated sentence “I have been very comfortable and practical option for me” interrupts the flow and appears to be an accidental duplication or editing error. Removing it would make the second paragraph more cohesive. You could also use a slightly more natural transition into the repair request, but the organisation is already effective.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use a suitable range of formal rental and workplace vocabulary, including “rental period,” “longer-term position,” “relocate,” and “disruption.” These choices communicate the situation clearly and show some flexibility beyond basic wording. However, several spelling errors—“arartment,” “apratment,” and “covenience”—reduce accuracy, and “six-months agreement” is an awkward form. The phrase “comfortable and practical option” is also repeated in a way that suggests imprecise editing. These issues do not prevent understanding, but more careful proofreading and more natural collocations would strengthen control. Aim to use precise expressions consistently, especially for the agreement and the requested repair.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.5

The letter demonstrates a good range of sentence structures, including a conditional-style request (“I would like to request an extension”), a relative clause (“which means I will no longer need to relocate”), and a complex sentence beginning “despite my efforts.” Many sentences are accurate and punctuation is generally controlled. The main grammatical weakness is the duplicated, incomplete wording “I have been very comfortable and practical option for me,” which lacks a grammatical connection between the ideas. There is also a plural-form issue in “six-months agreement”; the compound modifier should be singular. These are limited problems in an otherwise clear response. Proofreading for sentence completeness and modifier forms would help make the control more consistent.
