IELTS Writing Task 1 question
Five months ago, you started renting an apartment on a six-month agreement. You now wish to stay in the apartment for longer than the six months you originally agreed with the owner.
Write a letter to the owner of your apartment. In your letter
- say how long you now want to rent the apartment for
- explain why your plans have changed
- tell the owner about a problem in the apartment
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear landlord,
I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing to request regarding a rent agreement extension. I would like to stay in the Skyview Bay apartment for 1 year instead of 6 months. My name is Alpeshkumar, and I live with my family in this apartment.
There are several reasons why I have changed my plan. The main reason is that I can enjoy amenities, such as gym, patio, and gaming room, inside this apartment. Another reason is that my family members and I access nearby public transit, which is quite convenient and flexible option for us.
Undoubtedly, we have been facing a problem regarding elevator because it is not working most of the days in a month. It is quite difficult for us to use stairs every day because we live on sixth floors.
Thank you for considering my application. Please let me know if you need any further documents.
Yours sincerely,
Alpeshkumar

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You address all three required points: you request a one-year extension, explain that the apartment’s amenities and nearby transit suit your family, and report that the elevator often fails while you live on the sixth floor. The purpose is clear and the tone is appropriately polite, with a suitable request for consideration. The reasons are relevant, though they are presented briefly; for example, you could explain how the amenities or convenient transit affect your family’s decision to remain. Clarifying whether the one-year period would begin after the current agreement ends would also make the request more precise. Overall, the letter covers the task clearly, with some scope to extend and support its ideas further.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter has a clear progression: it opens with the request, gives reasons for the change, raises the maintenance issue, and closes politely. Paragraphing supports this sequence, and signposts such as “The main reason” and “Another reason” help the reader follow your explanation. The connection between the elevator problem and your request could be made more purposeful—for instance, you might ask when it will be repaired or explain how it affects your decision to stay. The transition from the reasons for extending to the complaint is understandable, though a linking phrase could make it smoother. Overall, organisation is clear and cohesive, with some room for more flexible linking and development.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You use an adequate range for a formal rental letter, including relevant terms such as “rent agreement extension,” “amenities,” “public transit,” and “considering my application.” These choices make the purpose and details clear. Some phrasing is less natural or precise: “request regarding a rent agreement extension” could be expressed more directly as “request an extension to my rental agreement,” while “quite convenient and flexible option” would be more idiomatic as “a convenient and flexible option.” “Facing a problem regarding elevator” is also awkward; “experiencing a problem with the elevator” is clearer. These occasional collocation and word-choice issues do not prevent understanding, but more natural phrasing would strengthen the letter’s fluency.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and more complex structures, including “There are several reasons why I have changed my plan” and the explanation beginning “because it is not working.” Most sentences communicate their meaning clearly, and the letter’s basic sentence control is sound. Some grammatical errors remain: “I am writing to request regarding” has an incomplete construction, “quite convenient and flexible option” needs an article, and “we live on sixth floors” should be “we live on the sixth floor.” The sentence about the elevator would also be clearer with a more precise time expression, such as “most days of the month.” Greater accuracy with articles, number, and sentence patterns, alongside a wider range of controlled complex structures, would improve the response.
