IELTS Writing Task 1 question
Five months ago, you started renting an apartment on a six-month agreement. You now wish to stay in the apartment for longer than the six months you originally agreed with the owner.
Write a letter to the owner of your apartment. In your letter
- say how long you now want to rent the apartment for
- explain why your plans have changed
- tell the owner about a problem in the apartment
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Mr.Oneil,
I hope you are doing well! I am writing to request you to extend my six-month agreement to one year due to my changed course schedule.
As I originally agreed with you for six months, I received an email last night with updation in my schedule for an advanced english course. Unfortunately, my university extended the course untill December. Therefore, to finish my course, I would be garteful if you could extend my aggreement for one year. Unlike other courses, I am not able to drop this course because most of the technologies based industries require university graduates to complete this course.
Rather than searching for another institue, I changed my plan to conitue this in the same university. Since I am living in your apartment from last 4 month, I experienced that the installed air-conditioning is not working properly. It was not my intention to complain because I was originally staying for six-months. It would appreciate it if you could look into this matter and fix this problem.
I will look forward to hearing from you soon.
Yours sincerely,
Rashim

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You address all three required points: you request an extension, explain that your course now runs until December, and report that the air-conditioning is not working properly. Your purpose is clear throughout, and the request is supported with relevant context about continuing at the same university. The explanation that you cannot drop the course is also useful, although the reference to what technology-based industries require is broad and does not add much specific support. The apartment problem is identified, and you politely ask the owner to arrange a repair. To strengthen the letter further, make the requested rental period and its end date fully consistent with the course dates, and develop the reason for choosing a one-year extension more explicitly.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The letter has a clear overall arrangement: the opening states the request, the next paragraph explains the course change, and the final body paragraph introduces the apartment problem. This makes the main purpose easy to follow. However, some links between ideas feel mechanical or unclear. For example, “Rather than searching for another institute” does not connect smoothly to the preceding explanation, and “Since I am living in your apartment from last 4 month” shifts abruptly from the course decision to the repair issue. Use clearer transitions to signal the change of topic, and ensure each paragraph develops one main point. The closing is appropriate, though the letter would flow more naturally if the request, reason, and proposed rental period were linked more directly.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a formal request, including “extend,” “course schedule,” “university graduates,” and “look into this matter.” These choices communicate the main ideas, and the polite phrasing suits a letter to a landlord. Some spelling and word-choice errors reduce accuracy, such as “updation,” “garteful,” “aggreement,” and “conitue.” There are also awkward expressions, including “technologies based industries” and “searching for another institue,” which make parts of the explanation less natural. Aim for standard collocations and check spelling carefully. More precise wording for the course change and the repair request would make the letter sound more fluent and professional.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including the conditional request “I would be grateful if you could extend…” and the reason introduced by “because.” Most of the message remains understandable, but some grammatical patterns need more control. For example, “I originally agreed with you for six months” uses an awkward agreement pattern, while “Since I am living in your apartment from last 4 month” has problems with tense and time expression. In “It would appreciate it if you could…,” the subject is missing. Review verb patterns, articles, and prepositions, and proofread punctuation and sentence boundaries. More consistently accurate sentences would make the formal request clearer.
