Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear house owner,

i hope you are doing well. the purpose of my email to you today is that i want to extend my lease from six months to a year. The reason to change my decision is that i got my new job near this building . it will be easy for me to commute from here instead of living somewhere else. Another thing that i really like this area but the only problem is less parking space because now both me and my husband have own car. we have to park car on house which is not safe and may not legial.

i hope you will understand my situation of not leaving this place. i am willing for a positive reply from you.if you are agree with this can you please arrage the lease papers . i will sign them and send them back to you.

thank you so much

you sincerly

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three required points: you request an extension, explain that a new job nearby makes staying convenient, and mention the parking problem. The request to extend the agreement “from six months to a year” is clear, and the reason is relevant. The parking issue is also understandable, though its effect on you and your husband could be explained more fully, and the letter could clarify whether you are asking the owner to provide or improve parking. The purpose and willingness to sign new papers are clear, but the closing request for a reply could be more direct and polite. Overall, the task is covered, with some details less fully developed than others.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The information follows a sensible order: you introduce the request, give your reason, describe the apartment problem, and finish by asking about the lease papers. Linking phrases such as “The reason” and “Another thing” help signal these stages, so the letter is coherent overall. However, the ideas are presented in one long block rather than clearly separated paragraphs, and some transitions sound mechanical. For example, “Another thing that I really like this area but” combines two points without a clear grammatical link. Use short paragraphs for the request, explanation and problem, and connect related ideas with more natural transitions. This would make the progression easier to follow and the letter more polished.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

Your vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the main message, with useful task-related terms such as “extend my lease,” “commute,” and “parking space.” However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, including “house owner,” “park car on house,” and “I am willing for a positive reply.” Spelling errors such as “legial,” “arrage,” and “sincerly” also reduce accuracy. These issues do not prevent the reader from understanding your request, but they show limited control of vocabulary and spelling. Aim for standard rental terminology and natural phrases, such as “landlord,” “park outside the building,” and “I look forward to hearing from you.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including the explanation that it will be easier to commute from the apartment. The main message remains understandable, but errors in sentence structure, verb forms, articles and punctuation are noticeable. For example, “the purpose of my email to you today is that i want” is an awkward construction, while “if you are agree with this” uses an incorrect verb pattern. The sentence beginning “Another thing that I really like this area” also lacks a clear grammatical structure. Capitalisation of “I” and sentence beginnings is inconsistent. Practise accurate request forms and joining clauses, for example, “I would like to extend my lease because my new job is nearby.”
