IELTS Writing Task 1 question

Five months ago, you started renting an apartment on a six-month agreement. You now wish to stay in the apartment for longer than the six months you originally agreed with the owner.

Write a letter to the owner of your apartment. In your letter

  • say how long you now want to rent the apartment for
  • explain why your plans have changed
  • tell the owner about a problem in the apartment

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir,

I am writing this letter to request the overstaying at this appartment after expiration of my agreement. I would like to stay for longer in this flat for such reasons.

To begin with,I would love to rent this place for more than six months after the lease agreement. This is the time I want to pursue my master's degree. This place is wonderful and perfect location for commuting. My internship was optional, but now I would like to finish those in six months. This will boost my CV and give me an opportunity to gain more experience.Due to this I intend to stay here for more period of time.

Other than that, I would like to shed some lights on issues that I faced during my stay. The water leackage has been continue since two days. Despite complaining several times, it is same in condition. It would be great if you could visit or send someone to repair as early as possible.

Yours Faithfully,

RHP

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address all three required points: you request an extension, explain that you want to complete your master’s degree and internship, and report a water leak. The purpose is clear, and the request for the owner to arrange a repair is appropriate. However, the proposed rental period is not stated precisely: “more than six months” does not tell the owner how long you want to stay. The explanation also needs clearer detail, particularly how the internship affects your plans and when the extension would begin. Develop these points and make the requested duration explicit to cover the task more fully.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter has a clear overall arrangement: an opening request, a paragraph explaining your plans, and a final paragraph about the apartment problem. Phrases such as “To begin with” and “Other than that” help signal the shift between topics. However, the opening repeats the request before the duration is clarified, and the explanation moves between your degree, the location, and the internship without a fully clear progression. The link “Due to this” is also vague because it is not immediately clear which reason it refers to. Organise the explanation in a more direct sequence and use clearer references to connect each point.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a suitable range of vocabulary for a formal letter, including “lease agreement,” “pursue my master’s degree,” “commuting,” and “gain more experience.” These choices communicate the main ideas, and the tone is generally appropriate. Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, however, such as “request the overstaying,” “shed some lights,” and “water leackage.” “Overstaying” suggests remaining without permission, rather than asking to extend a tenancy, while “shed some light” is the usual expression. Check spelling and choose standard rental and repair terminology. More precise phrasing would make the letter sound more natural and professional.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, for example, “Despite complaining several times, it is same in condition” and “This will boost my CV and give me an opportunity to gain more experience.” The main message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors affect accuracy. In “I would like to stay for longer in this flat for such reasons,” the phrasing and sentence construction are awkward; “the water … has been continue since two days” has an incorrect verb form and time expression; and “it is same in condition” is missing an article and has an unclear structure. Review verb forms, articles, and sentence boundaries, while retaining your attempts at longer sentences.
