Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear John,
I hope you are doing good. I am writing to request you for extending our agreement for another six months.
As you know, our existing six-month contract is going to end on 28th February, that is why I want to extend this for another six months if possible. Therefore our next contract can start on the 1st March and will finish at the end of the August.
Initially, I want to move back to my hometown after finishing my course. But now I just got an offer of a six-month training from the same institute. That is why, my plan of moving back is changed and I thought to extend our contract.
Although everything is good in this apartment, but recently, I have been facing problems with noices. A new family just moved in the next apartment and they create alot of noices. They are your tenants as well, so can you please ask them to avoid making noice because it disturb my sleep and I cannot focus my work in day time properly.
Looking forward to hearing from you.
Yours sincerely,
Umer Nazeer

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 8.0
The letter covers all three required points clearly: you request a further six months, explain that a training offer has changed your plans, and report noise from the neighbouring apartment. The dates and proposed new rental period make the request specific, while the effect on your sleep and work explains why the problem matters. The purpose and tone remain clear throughout, and the closing is appropriate. To make the response even more complete, you could specify whether you would like the owner to contact the neighbours or take another action, and briefly acknowledge that you are willing to discuss the extension’s terms. Overall, the key ideas are well developed, with only small opportunities to add detail.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The information is arranged in a sensible sequence: the request and dates come first, the reason for the change follows, and the apartment problem is raised before the closing. Paragraphing helps the reader distinguish these points, and phrases such as “As you know” and “Initially” guide the progression. Some linking is less controlled: “Although everything is good … but” uses two contrasting signals together, and “That is why” is repeated close together. There is also no space after the full stop in “possible. Therefore,” which interrupts the presentation. Use one connector at a time and vary the transitions—for example, “However” to introduce the noise complaint—to make the flow smoother.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range for this practical letter, including relevant terms such as “six-month contract,” “training,” “extend,” and “tenants.” The reader can understand the request and complaint without difficulty. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or informal: “doing good” would be more natural as “doing well,” “request you for extending” is awkward, and “noices” is a repeated spelling error. “Alot” should be written as two words, “a lot.” These slips do not prevent communication, but they limit precision and naturalness. Aim to learn common letter-writing phrases as complete expressions, such as “request an extension” and “make a lot of noise.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
The letter includes both simple sentences and more developed structures, such as “Initially, I want to move back … But now I just got an offer,” and the meaning is generally clear. Some grammatical errors remain. In “I am writing to request you for extending,” the verb pattern is incorrect; write “request an extension” or “ask you to extend.” “Although everything is good … but” combines incompatible structures, and “it disturb my sleep” needs subject–verb agreement (“it disturbs”). The phrase “will finish at the end of the August” also has an unnecessary article. Check verb patterns, agreement, and articles during revision. More consistently accurate complex sentences would strengthen the response.
