IELTS Writing Task 1 question

Five months ago, you started renting an apartment on a six-month agreement. You now wish to stay in the apartment for longer than the six months you originally agreed with the owner.

Write a letter to the owner of your apartment. In your letter

  • say how long you now want to rent the apartment for
  • explain why your plans have changed
  • tell the owner about a problem in the apartment

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Jack,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter because I want to extend my agreement of living in your apartment. The agreement was basically about to end in this month; now I want to stay here for more three months till 30 April.

I was about to leave this apartment at the end of this month by the completion of my graduation; but a compny offered me internship. This is great opprtunity for me; consequentally, I changed my decision of leaving this apartment.

I also want to lodge a complain about internet service because I do online work and it requires remarkable internet service. I have been suffering from this problem for two months because during rennovation it was affected.

I was therefore wondering if you could extend my six-month agreement and also make internet service accessible in my apartment.I am looking forward for your response

Yours faithfully,

Huda

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three required points: you request a further three months, explain that an internship has changed your plans, and report an internet problem. The purpose is clear and the details are relevant. The request to stay “till 30 April” gives a specific end date, while the explanation that the internship is a “great opportunity” makes the change understandable. The apartment problem is also linked to your online work and the renovation. However, the problem and the requested remedy could be developed more fully—for example, explain whether the connection is unreliable or unavailable and ask for a repair or provider visit. This covers the task well overall, though some points are less fully explained than others.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a clear overall progression: you introduce the extension request, explain the changed plans, describe the internet issue, and finish by asking the owner to act. Separate paragraphs help the reader follow these points, and phrases such as “I was therefore wondering” connect the problem to your request. Some links are less smooth or precise, however. “The agreement was basically about to end in this month” is an awkward opening to the timing, and the final request combines extending the agreement with fixing the internet without clearly separating the two actions. The closing also lacks a full stop before the sign-off. More direct transitions and a clearly organised final request would make the cohesion more flexible and polished.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to communicate the main points, including “extend,” “internship,” “lodge a complaint,” and “renovation.” Some choices show an attempt to use formal language, but several spelling and collocation errors reduce accuracy: “compny,” “opprtunity,” “consequentally,” “complain,” and “renn ovation” (written as “renn ovation” in the response) should be corrected. Phrases such as “agreement of living” and “remarkable internet service” are also unnatural in this context, and “accessible” does not clearly describe a connection that works reliably. Aim for accurate, natural combinations such as “extend my tenancy,” “a reliable internet connection,” and “the service was disrupted.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and more complex sentences, including the explanation beginning “I was about to leave” and the reason introduced by “because.” The main message remains understandable, but some grammatical patterns are inaccurate or awkward. For example, “for more three months” needs a different quantity phrase, and “I am looking forward for your response” uses the wrong preposition and form. “The agreement was basically about to end in this month” also has an unnatural time expression, while “apartment.I” needs a space after the full stop. Review prepositions, articles, and sentence punctuation, and check that each sentence expresses one clear relationship between ideas. More consistently accurate control would strengthen the letter.
