Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Jain,
Hope this letter finds you well. I am your tenant Harman.
I am writing this letter to you regarding apartment agreement. I have been renting this apartment number 506 in victoria. Five months ago, I signed a lease with you to rent this apartment for six months but now I want to stay at this place for one year.
Actually, earlier my manager was planning to shift me at another location for work but for this time his plan has been canclled so I am working at same site. This apartment is at convenient place as it is not far away from my workplace that makes it easy for me to comute everyday; therefore, I am planning to rent this for ling time.
The main concern about this buiding is washing machine is not working properly. It makes issue that I have been facing since I rented this apartment. Moreover, it makes huge noice while I am doing loundry that creates disturbance not only for me but for neighbours as well. Please repair this machine as soon as possible.
I hope you will take my words into consideration. Looking your response soon.
Regards,
Harman

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The letter addresses all three requirements clearly. You state that you want to rent the apartment for “one year,” explain that your manager’s relocation plan was cancelled and that the apartment is convenient for your workplace, and describe the washing-machine problem while requesting a repair. These details make your purpose clear and relevant throughout. The explanation for staying is supported with a practical reason, and the problem is described in terms of its effect on you and your neighbours. To strengthen the response further, make the requested extension more precise—for example, clarify whether you mean one year from now or one year in total—and develop the change in your work plans slightly more fully. The letter otherwise maintains a clear, appropriate purpose.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The information is arranged in a sensible sequence: you introduce yourself and the agreement, explain why you wish to stay, then raise the maintenance issue and close politely. Paragraphing helps the reader distinguish these points, and connectors such as “Actually,” “therefore,” and “Moreover” show how ideas relate. This gives the letter a coherent overall structure. Some linking is a little mechanical, however, and the sentence beginning “This apartment is at convenient place” combines several ideas in a way that makes the progression less smooth. The closing, “Looking your response soon,” also feels abrupt. Use more natural transitions and make references between sentences clearer to show the flexible, consistently smooth progression expected at a stronger level.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use enough vocabulary to communicate the main points, including “lease,” “convenient,” “workplace,” “disturbance,” and “repair.” The language is generally understandable, but noticeable spelling and word-choice errors reduce precision: “canclled,” “comute,” “ling,” “noice,” and “loundry” make the letter look less controlled. Some phrases are also unnatural, such as “makes issue,” “rent this for ling time,” and “take my words into consideration.” Aim for accurate, natural collocations rather than translating phrases directly. For example, describe the machine as “causing a problem” and say you would like to “extend the rental agreement.” Proofreading spelling and choosing more precise expressions would make your vocabulary more effective and professional.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The letter includes a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, and several sentences communicate their meaning clearly, such as “I have been renting this apartment… for six months but now I want to stay…” and the explanation beginning “Actually, earlier my manager…”. Some grammatical errors remain, but they rarely prevent understanding. For instance, “I am writing this letter to you regarding apartment agreement” needs an article (“the apartment agreement”), while “This apartment is at convenient place” needs “a convenient place.” The sentence “This apartment is at convenient place as it is not far away from my workplace that makes it easy…” also has an unclear relative clause. Work on articles and sentence construction, and use a more natural closing such as “I look forward to hearing from you.”
