- tell the owner about a problem in the apartment
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Mr William,
I am writing to express my interest to stay in apartment for further six months. I have been living here for past few months on a lease agreement with you and I want to extend it for one year.
As you know, I work full-time in Infosys Solutions as a Software Engineer. My company gave me contract for six months which has already completed. But now they offer me to stay few more months because of the ongoing imperative project. I am working as a team leader, my colleagues require my assistance to finish the task.
The location of this place is near to my company which is convenient for me. Therefore, I have changed my mind to move to another apartment and interested to stay here for more months. Since, the time I am living here, everthing is going perfectly without any trouble.
However, I have noticed that there is a drainage issue in the kitchen beneath the dishwashing area which needs your attention as soon as possible. I would appreciate it if you could book an appointment with professional plumber who can visit and fix this problem at earliest convenience. In addition, I would like to extend my rent agreement upto one year.
I look forward to your response.
Yours sincerely,
Harman

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The letter addresses all three requirements clearly: you request a longer rental period, explain that your employer has extended your work because of an ongoing project, and report a kitchen drainage problem. Your reason for staying is supported with relevant details about your team-leader role and the apartment’s convenient location. The request is also clear, although the duration is not fully consistent: you first ask to stay for “further six months,” then say “for one year” and “upto one year.” Clarifying whether you want six additional months or a one-year extension would make the purpose more precise. The problem is identified and you ask the owner to arrange a plumber, so the letter is complete and appropriately focused.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The information is arranged in a sensible sequence: the opening states your request, the next paragraphs explain your changed work plans and preference to remain, and the final body paragraph raises the repair issue. Paragraphing helps the reader follow these distinct points. You also use linking expressions such as “But,” “Therefore,” and “However” to signal relationships between ideas. At times, though, the connections feel mechanical or the reference is unclear; for example, “Since, the time I am living here” does not connect smoothly to the preceding sentence. The repeated request to extend the agreement at the end also interrupts the progression. A more concise closing paragraph and clearer links between sentences would make the cohesion more flexible.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You use an adequate range for a formal rental letter, including relevant terms such as “lease agreement,” “ongoing project,” “drainage issue,” and “professional plumber.” These choices make the purpose and problem easy to understand, and the tone is generally suitable. Some word combinations and forms are less natural, however: “express my interest to stay” and “they offer me to stay” do not sound idiomatic, while “imperative project” is an imprecise choice for a project that is continuing. There are also spelling and form errors, including “everthing” and “upto.” These do not prevent understanding, but more accurate collocations and careful proofreading would improve precision and fluency.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The letter includes both simple and more developed sentence forms, such as the explanation beginning “because of the ongoing imperative project” and the request beginning “I would appreciate it if…”. The main ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “in apartment” needs an article, “for past few months” is missing an article, and “they offer me” does not use a tense that matches the completed contract and current offer. The sentence “I am working as a team leader, my colleagues require my assistance” joins two independent clauses with only a comma. The opening also gives conflicting rental periods, which affects clarity. Check articles, tense consistency, and sentence boundaries, while retaining the complex structures you already attempt.
