Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Mr.Sharma,

I hope you are doing well.I am writing to extend my lease from six month to a year,as I decided to stay for a long at your apartment.

A main reason why I made a decision to extend my lease is the demand of my curent job.So I will make another agrrement for a year .

I got promoted to a store manager ,due to which ,I have made an contract with my company for a year. Therefore,my current residential place is quite near from my work .

There is a one thing that I would like to discuss with you about is the less heating in the room during winter. As winters are quite challenging here in Canada. It would be great if could send plumber to check in the problem.

Thank you for your support and time.I am looking forward to hearing from you soon.

Yours truly,

Sukhdeep kaur.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You cover all three required points: you request a one-year extension, explain that your promotion and work contract have changed your plans, and report inadequate heating in winter. The reason for staying is relevant, and the apartment’s proximity to work adds useful support. The request is understandable, but the intended rental period could be stated more precisely—for example, whether the year begins when the current agreement ends. The heating issue is also identified, though the description is brief and could explain its effect or urgency. These details mean the task is addressed, but some points are less fully developed than others. A clearer timeline and a little more explanation of the problem would make the letter more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a clear overall shape: an opening request, reasons for the change, a paragraph about the apartment problem, and a polite closing. This makes the purpose easy to follow. Linking expressions such as “So,” “Therefore,” and “As” help connect ideas, although some links feel mechanical or do not clearly show the relationship between sentences. The reason for extending is split across two paragraphs, and the connection between the promotion, the one-year company contract, and the rental period could be made more direct. The heating paragraph also begins awkwardly with “There is a one thing.” Grouping the explanation into one focused paragraph and using clearer transitions would improve progression and cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the letter, including relevant terms such as “extend my lease,” “promoted,” “contract,” and “heating.” The meaning is generally clear, and the tone is appropriately polite. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, including “stay for a long,” “demand of my current job,” and “less heating.” Spelling errors such as “curent” and “agrrement” also reduce accuracy. Aim for precise, natural phrases—for instance, “remain in the apartment longer,” “my new role requires me to stay,” and “the heating is inadequate.” More accurate collocations and careful proofreading would make your vocabulary more flexible and professional.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including the reason clause “why I made a decision to extend” and the explanation beginning “due to which.” The main message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors occur in articles, agreement, sentence construction, and punctuation. Examples include “from six month to a year,” “I have made an contract,” and “if could send plumber,” where articles or a subject are missing. The sentence “There is a one thing that I would like to discuss with you about is…” is also structurally difficult to follow. Spacing after full stops and commas is inconsistent. Practise building clear request sentences and checking articles, plurals, and clause structure; this will help you retain complexity with greater accuracy.
