Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Mr.Smith,

I am writing letter to express my concern to extend my rent agrement longer than six-month.As per the intial discussion, I need the apartment only for six month but Now, I look forward to extend my agreement from six-month to two years.

As you know, I have signed the six-month agrement due to my job training program afterwards, Compnay will hire me as a full-time employee with job relocation. Unfortunately, my job recolation got cancelled at last moment due to change company policy. Now, I got the full-time offer with same location. I would like to stay in this apartment as its nearby my office location and grocies and shopping mall in a walkable distance which make its suitable place to stay for long run.

I would really appreciate if you could resolve the water leakage issue in bathroom. Futhermore, I would be grateful to you if you provide the permanent fix for Washing machine.

I look forward to your prompt response and I hope you understand my situation and extend the apartment rent agrement.

Yours Truely,

Alex

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The letter addresses all three required points and maintains a clear, polite purpose. You specify that you want to extend the rental from six months to two years, explain that the relocation was cancelled and you have accepted a full-time role locally, and identify both a bathroom leak and a washing-machine problem. The explanation that the apartment is near your office and local amenities also supports your request. These relevant details make the message clear and sufficiently developed. To strengthen it further, make the requested action on the washing machine more precise and clarify whether you are asking the owner to arrange repairs to both problems. Overall, the key information is covered and supported with relevant reasons.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The information follows a clear, logical sequence: you introduce the extension request, explain the change in your employment plans, report the apartment problems, and close by asking for a response. Paragraphing helps distinguish these purposes, and linking phrases such as “Unfortunately,” “Furthermore,” and “As you know” guide the reader through the message. The progression is easy to follow throughout. Some connections could be more natural and precise: for example, “Futhermore” introduces the washing-machine issue, but the relationship between the two repair requests is not explained. The final sentence also repeats the request to extend the agreement rather than adding a clear next step. More varied, carefully targeted transitions would make the cohesion less noticeable.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use vocabulary relevant to a rental letter, including “full-time employee,” “job relocation,” “water leakage,” and “permanent fix,” so the reader can understand the main points. There is some attempt to use formal expressions such as “I would really appreciate” and “I look forward to your prompt response.” However, inaccurate spelling and word choice are noticeable, including “agrement,” “intial,” “recocation,” and “grocies.” Some phrases are also unnatural, such as “extend my rent agreement” and “for long run.” These errors limit precision and make the language less natural, even though the message remains understandable. Check spelling carefully and learn common collocations for rental arrangements and maintenance requests.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The letter includes both simple and more complex sentence forms, particularly in the explanation of your employment plans and the sentence beginning “I would like to stay in this apartment as…”. The overall meaning is generally clear, but grammatical errors occur repeatedly. For example, “I am writing letter” needs an article, and “I would really appreciate if” requires “it” before “if.” The sentence about the training programme and the company hiring you is difficult to control because several ideas are joined without clear punctuation. There are also inconsistent capital letters after commas and within sentences. Practise accurate articles, sentence boundaries, and clause structure; these changes would make your request easier to read while preserving the useful range of sentence patterns.
