Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Mr. Khan,

I hope you are doing well.

I have been living in your flat for almost 5 months, and our rent agreement will expire next month. I am writing to request that I would like to extend the rent agreement for a further six months period. I am intrested to renew the rent contarct due to the reason that I have decided to attend a 6 months technical workshop in the nearby factory. Consequently, it will be quite affordable and time saving for me to attend the workship daily from the current flat by local bus. Additionally, it is easy for me to shop groceries and other essentials from the supermarket located on the opposite side of the road.

Morover, I would like to draw your attention to the problem that gryser is not working properly since yesterday in the kitchen. therefore it is requested to please arrange a plumber for it's corrective maintenance by the end of this weekend.

your sincerly,

Akram Ullah

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The letter addresses all three requirements clearly: you request a further six months, explain that you will attend a technical workshop nearby, and report that the kitchen geyser is not working properly. The reasons for staying are relevant and supported with practical details, such as the local bus and nearby supermarket, so the owner can understand your decision. The repair request is also specific, including a proposed deadline. To make the response more fully developed, clarify whether the workshop is the main reason for extending and give a little more detail about the geyser problem or its effect. Overall, the purpose and requested actions remain clear throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The information follows a sensible order: you introduce the rental agreement, explain why you want to stay, and then raise the maintenance issue. Linking expressions such as “Consequently” and “Additionally” help show how the supporting details relate to your plans. The letter is understandable as a whole, but the main body is presented as one long paragraph, so the change from the extension request to the repair issue is not visually clear. Some transitions also feel mechanical, particularly “Consequently” before the practical benefits. Use separate paragraphs for the extension and the apartment problem, and choose simpler links where the relationship is direct. This would make the progression more polished and cohesion less noticeable.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the purpose, including “extend,” “technical workshop,” “affordable,” and “corrective maintenance.” These choices communicate the main points, and the reader can understand the request. However, several spelling errors and awkward word combinations reduce precision: “intrested,” “contarct,” “workship,” and “Morover” are misspelled, while “extend the rent agreement” and “shop groceries” are not natural collocations. “Geyser” is the appropriate term in some varieties of English, but ensure the spelling is correct. Proofread carefully and learn common phrases such as “renew the tenancy agreement” and “buy groceries” to make your vocabulary more accurate and natural.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The letter includes both simple and more complex sentence forms, such as the explanation beginning “I am interested to renew…” and the sentence describing the workshop and daily travel. Most meaning is clear, but some grammatical errors remain. In “I am writing to request that I would like to extend,” the structures are combined awkwardly; write “I am writing to request a six-month extension.” The phrase “for a further six months period” needs a plural form or a different construction, such as “for a further six-month period.” There are also errors in “it is requested to please arrange” and “for it's corrective maintenance,” including an unclear passive construction and incorrect possessive punctuation. Aim for direct, complete sentences and check articles, agreement, and punctuation.
