Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir,

I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing this letter to extend my lease agreement in your apartments.

Firstly, I have realized today that my lease is completing this month and it would be appretiated if you can extend my rent agreement for another six-month. I can give you a deposit for next month just to give you a surity.

Since I have explained you that I am moving to another city due to my job posting, but now, company wants me to stay here for another some months due to the shortage of staff in our organization.

This apartment is perfect choice for me because every store is within the walking distance, but I have concern related with hot water tank intermittent if you can call to plumber to fix that issue on priority basis, it would be fantastic.

I look forward for your positive response.

Yours sincerely,

Adam.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You cover all three required points: you request a further six months, explain that your employer has changed your plans because of staff shortages, and report an intermittent hot-water problem. The request is clear, and the reason is relevant. However, some details are less fully developed: “another some months” does not explain the employer’s expected timeframe, while the hot-water issue could be described more precisely, such as when it occurs or how long it has been happening. The reference to having already explained your move also assumes prior context that is not established in this letter. Adding a clearer timeline and a little more detail would make the purpose and supporting information more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a clear overall sequence: you state your purpose, explain the change in plans, mention why the apartment suits you, and raise a maintenance issue before closing. Paragraphing helps separate these points, and phrases such as “Since” and “but now” signal the relationship between ideas. Some linking is mechanical, particularly “Firstly,” and the transition from the reason for staying to the apartment’s location could be smoother. The reference “Since I have explained you” also makes the connection to earlier communication unclear. A more direct progression, with each paragraph focused on one purpose and clearer references, would make the cohesion more natural and flexible.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range for a practical letter, including relevant terms such as “lease agreement,” “deposit,” “shortage of staff,” and “intermittent.” These choices communicate the main points, and the tone is generally polite. However, several word-choice, collocation, and spelling problems reduce precision: “extend my rent agreement” is less natural than “extend my tenancy,” “give you a surity” is unclear, and “hot water tank intermittent” does not express the problem accurately. There are also spelling errors in “appretiated” and “surity.” Aim for standard rental terminology and check spelling; more precise phrasing would make the letter sound more fluent and professional.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including the conditional request “if you can extend…” and the explanation beginning “Since…”. The main message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors affect accuracy. For example, “if you can extend” would be more appropriately framed as “if you could extend,” and “Since I have explained you that…” has an incomplete or awkward clause structure. In “another six-month,” the time expression needs a plural form, while “every store is within the walking distance” has an unnecessary article. The hot-water sentence also lacks a clear grammatical structure. Review clause construction, articles, and plural forms, then proofread longer sentences carefully.
