Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Julia,

I hope this email finds you well. I am writing to request a extend of my apartmnet lease for another 1 year becasue I got a job, as a digital marketer within in the city center.

The apartmnet is located in the center of city, which makes my commuting more convenient and comfortable. And it is also nearby to all the ameneties such as, drug store, hospital and grocery store. As I mentioned earliier, the main reason to extend the lease is my work location. Before, I was expecting to get a job in another city but I got it here which made my life more easier.

I would like to discuss one more thing with you that the dryer is not working well. I am noticing from last 2 days, it is making a strange noice whenever I use it. I would be grateful, if you could arrange a repair or replace it with new one.

I really appreciate your concentration on this matter.

Your faithfully,

Jashan

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You address all three required points clearly: you request a further year, explain that you obtained a digital-marketing job in the city, and report that the dryer makes a strange noise. The reason for staying is supported with relevant details about the central location and nearby amenities, so the purpose of the letter is easy to understand. The dryer issue is also accompanied by a practical request for repair or replacement. To make the response more fully developed, clarify the timing of the extension—for example, whether the extra year would begin when the current six-month agreement ends—and give a little more detail about the problem or its impact. Overall, the key information is present and relevant, though some points could be more precise.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a clear overall arrangement: the opening states the request and reason, the next paragraph explains the location’s advantages, and the final body paragraph raises the dryer problem. This progression helps the reader follow your purpose, and phrases such as “As I mentioned earlier” connect related information. However, some linking is mechanical or awkward: beginning a sentence with “And” is unnecessary here, while “As I mentioned earlier” refers to a reason only just introduced. The closing is separated appropriately, but the letter would flow more naturally if the extension request and its explanation were grouped more tightly and transitions were used more selectively. The organisation is coherent, with some cohesion still needing refinement.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range for this letter, including relevant terms such as “lease,” “commuting,” “amenities,” and “arrange a repair.” These choices make the situation understandable and show some awareness of formal correspondence. However, several spelling errors and imprecise or unnatural phrases reduce accuracy, including “apartmnet,” “becasue,” “nearby to,” and “concentration on this matter.” “Extend” is also not the natural noun in “request a extend”; “extension” would fit. Aim to check spelling carefully and choose collocations that sound natural in a formal request. The meaning remains clear, but more consistent control of word forms and phrasing would strengthen the letter.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and more developed sentence forms, including the relative clause “which makes my commuting more convenient” and the explanation beginning “Before, I was expecting…”. The main message remains clear despite some grammatical errors. For example, “I am writing to request a extend” needs the article and noun form “an extension,” while “I am noticing from last 2 days” would be more accurately expressed as “I have noticed this over the last two days.” There are also issues with sentence construction in “And it is also nearby…” and punctuation around “I would be grateful, if…”. Review articles, tense choices, and comma placement; these are some errors rather than barriers to understanding.
