IELTS Writing Task 1 question

Five months ago, you started renting an apartment on a six-month agreement. You now wish to stay in the apartment for longer than the six months you originally agreed with the owner.

Write a letter to the owner of your apartment. In your letter

  • say how long you now want to rent the apartment for
  • explain why your plans have changed
  • tell the owner about a problem in the apartment

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Mike,

I hope you are doing well

I am writing this letter to express my interest in staying more than half-year I made agreement with you, as well a concern of cooling in your property.

Firstly I am thankful to you for giving me a space to stay. As you know, I leased the apartment for 6 months. However, now I now want to extend the lease for 4 months more.

The reason behind it is that I was supposed to work from home. Nevertheless, my company changed the plan of switching the work mode. This apartment is located at convenient location, making it easy for me to go to my office. Moreover, there are all basic amenities available in this area.

Although your apartment is fully furnished and has all facilites, now i am experiencing that its air conditioning system is not working properly, making it difficult to sleep at night in summer time.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address all three required points: you request a four-month extension, explain that your company changed its work arrangements, and report that the air conditioning is not working properly. The reasons for staying are relevant, especially the apartment’s convenient location and nearby amenities. However, the explanation of the changed plans is somewhat unclear: “I was supposed to work from home” followed by “my company changed the plan of switching the work mode” does not clearly state what arrangement changed. The maintenance issue is identified, but you could make the request more complete by asking the owner to arrange a repair. A clear closing and sign-off would also make the letter feel finished.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The letter has a generally sensible order: you introduce your purpose, explain the extension, give reasons, and then mention the apartment problem. Paragraphing helps separate these points, and transitions such as “However,” “Moreover,” and “Although” show attempts to connect ideas. Some linking is mechanical or unclear, though. “Firstly” is not followed by a clear sequence of numbered points, and “Although” introduces a contrast that is not fully developed. The opening and final lines also feel incomplete, particularly the isolated “you” at the end. Use clearer paragraph transitions and finish with a direct request and an appropriate sign-off to improve progression.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the letter, including “extend the lease,” “convenient location,” “basic amenities,” and “air conditioning system.” These expressions communicate the main points, and the reader can understand the problem and your reasons for staying. Some word choices and collocations are less natural, such as “express my interest in staying more than half-year I made agreement with you,” “a space to stay,” and “in summer time.” There are also spelling and capitalization slips, including “facilites” and “i.” Aim for more precise, natural phrases suited to a polite letter, and proofread spelling and capitalization before submitting.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including the clause beginning “Although your apartment is fully furnished” and the participle phrase “making it difficult to sleep.” Most of the message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors and punctuation problems reduce accuracy. For example, “I am writing this letter to express my interest in staying more than half-year I made agreement with you” joins ideas without the necessary structure, while “I now now want” repeats a word and “6 months. However” lacks a space after the full stop. Capitalization is inconsistent in “i” and “you.” Separate ideas into complete sentences, check articles and sentence boundaries, and proofread for repeated words.
