Student answer (Band 6.5)

Technological advancements and globalization have opened the doors of the global market for all individuals across the globe. While some people prefer to buy specialized quality goods of the international companies, a few has shown the concerns and

The primary reason for not using imported goods is the increased rate of unemployment in some countries. Due to globalization and open trade policies, many companies have established their manufacturing facilities into lower labor cost countries. They produce goods in the countries where raw materials are cheap and labor are inexpensive. These products are then exported to the countries with labor and production costs, leading unemployment in manufacturing industries. Additionally, many low profile and IT related jobs such as data entry, accounting, and software development have been outsourced to the developed countries, creating massive unemployment in higher wage rate countries.

This has created consumer awareness to protect their local industries and markets for sustainable future. Many governments have also started promoting their local industries by introducing tariffs for imported goods and subsidies for domestic products, making imported good costlier.

In addition, due to heavy outsourcing, the supply chain disruption during global pandemics, natural calamities, and geopolitical tensions creates supply shortages of essential goods, provoking many countries to become self sufficient for essential goods.

As per my opinion, this is a positive change. The governments and consumers should promote and protect their farmers and small industries for a better economy and long term stability. Increased demand of local goods and import duties will force the multinational corporation to produce domestically which will create employments. This will also protect small businesses by proving equal opportunities in the market. Furthermore, this will improve the situation in some developing countries too. Many multinational companies, under the pretext of proving employment, are exploiting the labor and violating pollution norms.

To conclude, global trade is good, but not at the excessive rate, Balance is required for overall benefits

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the reasons for choosing local goods and the opinion on whether this is a positive trend. The ideas are relevant, particularly the discussion on unemployment and supply chain resilience. However, the introduction is incomplete, as it cuts off mid-sentence, which impacts the overall development of the position. While the arguments are logical, some points, such as the mention of 'low profile' jobs being outsourced to developed countries, are slightly confusing in their phrasing. To reach a higher band, ensure the introduction is fully formed and that all arguments are clearly linked to the specific question asked.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each focusing on a distinct aspect of the prompt. There is a clear progression of ideas from the reasons for the trend to the author's personal opinion. Cohesive devices such as 'Additionally,' 'In addition,' and 'Furthermore' are used to connect ideas. However, the referencing is occasionally mechanical, and the abrupt ending of the introduction creates a lack of cohesion at the very beginning of the text. The conclusion is also quite brief and lacks a summary of the main points, which affects the overall flow of the argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, with some good topic-specific collocations such as 'supply chain disruption,' 'geopolitical tensions,' and 'sustainable future.' There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'a few has shown the concerns' (should be 'a few have shown concern') and 'proving equal opportunities' (likely meant 'providing'). The range of vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended meaning, but it lacks the sophistication and precision required for higher bands. Expanding the range of synonyms and ensuring correct word forms would improve this score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('labor are inexpensive' instead of 'labor is inexpensive') and missing articles or incorrect pluralization ('leading unemployment' instead of 'leading to unemployment'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not generally impede communication. The sentence structure is functional, but the range of complex structures is somewhat limited. Improving control over articles and prepositions, as well as ensuring subject-verb agreement, will help in achieving a higher band score.
