Student answer (Band 6.5)

In this era of globalization, where companies are spreading their business worldwide, there is a debate going on, that people should consume the local products more as compared to the the foreign one. It has both positive and negative impacts on the economy but i think its advantages outweigh the disadvantages.

On the one hand, individuals are preferring to consume locally made products, which in my opinion is a very beneficial for the people of that country. By doing this, people are contributing more to the economy. Moreover, this also helps the local people to earn their bread and butter. For instance, if everyone starts to buy cookies or clothes from the local markets which are made domestically, this will help the country to grow more and the local products will also get promoted to other countries.

On the other hand, this can affect the economy negatively, as if the demand for the foreign products will decline, it can stop the foreign investment in the country. Although, they can tackle this situation by communicating with the foreign companies to start their production locally. This will also generate the jobs for the local citizens, which will directly help in the country’s growth.

To conclude this, in my opinion consumers should go for the locally made products and is not, they should buy the products which are made in their country. If everyone starts buying domestic products, this will also help to preserve their culture and heritage also, as local people makes products which are highly influenced by the culture and history.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the reasons for buying local and the evaluation of the trend. The position is clear from the introduction and maintained throughout. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the explanation regarding foreign investment is a bit simplistic, and the argument about culture in the conclusion is introduced late rather than being integrated into the body paragraphs. To reach a higher band, you should aim to expand on your points with more detailed reasoning or specific real-world examples, ensuring that each paragraph fully explores the implications of the trend rather than just stating them.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each with a distinct focus. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'Moreover', and 'To conclude this' to guide the reader. However, the flow between some sentences is slightly mechanical, and the use of referencing could be more sophisticated. For example, the transition between the economic impact and the cultural argument in the conclusion feels a bit abrupt. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that ideas within paragraphs are more tightly connected would enhance the overall coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'globalization', 'domestically', and 'heritage' appropriately. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there are some instances of repetitive phrasing, such as 'local products' and 'locally made products'. To improve, try to incorporate more precise collocations and less common lexical items to express your ideas with greater nuance. For example, instead of 'earn their bread and butter', you could use 'sustain their livelihoods'. The vocabulary is sufficient to communicate your meaning clearly, but it lacks the flexibility and precision required for higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'a very beneficial' (should be 'very beneficial'), 'the the foreign one' (repetition), and 'local people makes' (subject-verb agreement). Additionally, there are some awkward phrasings like 'is not, they should buy'. To achieve a higher score, you need to increase the frequency of error-free complex sentences and pay closer attention to articles, subject-verb agreement, and punctuation. Proofreading your work for these minor slips would significantly improve the accuracy of your writing.
