Student answer (Band 7.0)
There is a significant increase in consumers choice to purchase commodities that are manufactured in their locality, rather than imported goods. This could be as a result of the need to contribute to economic growth as well as encouraging local manufacturers to create job opportunities. I believe this is a welcome development as it would contribute greatly to the economy and also expose the produce of that locality to the world at large.
One major reason why many people have started to prefer purchasing local products is because they have witnessed first hand what importation of foreign products have done to the economy of many countries. A very good example is the Nigerian economy which has been on a decline year after year. Nigerians mainly rely on foreign products and this has led to a major disbelief on the local products. Another reason people buy the local produce is because it is affordable. The prices of imported commodities are overly expensive as the cost of shipping is included. People have started to realise that their local commodities are equally as good as the foreign products.
I believe this is a positive development as it encourages manufacturers to grow and to create Job opportunities for the locals. When a product is produced, the first people it is available to are the local people. Patronizing such businesses will increase the company's revenue and also give room for expansion. This will in turn increase the amount of Job opportunities in the country. Another reason is that it promotes economic growth. A country that rely mostly on its on produce tend to experience an economic boom year after year. There will be a significant need to export the locally produced commodities to other countries which will in turn encourage other countries to invest their money in the country. For example, China is commonly known to produce almost everything they make use of. This has been boosting their economy for some years now as many business owners in textile, electronic, furniture and cookwares now go China to import.
This act has reduced the need for foreign exchanges thereby placing more value on their currency
In conclusion, the reason people now see the need to purchase their locally made produce is because it is less expensive and it will lead to economic growth. This development is a positive one as it creates more Job opportunities and also economic growth.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response addresses all parts of the prompt: it identifies reasons for the trend (economic growth, job creation, affordability) and clearly states a position that it is a positive development. The ideas are relevant and generally well-supported, particularly the discussion on economic benefits and job creation. However, the explanation regarding China is slightly confusing; while the intent is to show the benefits of local production, the example mentions people going to China to import, which contradicts the premise of buying local. Despite this minor logical inconsistency, the task is fully addressed with a clear, consistent position throughout.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each with a central theme. Cohesive devices such as 'One major reason', 'Another reason', and 'In conclusion' are used to guide the reader. However, the flow is occasionally hindered by mechanical transitions. For instance, the final sentence of the third paragraph ('This act has reduced...') feels disconnected from the preceding paragraph about China. Additionally, some referencing is slightly repetitive. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that every sentence clearly relates to the paragraph's topic sentence would elevate the coherence of the response.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary is generally adequate and allows for clear communication. You use some topic-specific terms like 'commodities', 'foreign exchange', and 'patronizing'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'disbelief on the local products' (should be 'distrust of') and 'overly expensive' (which is redundant). The range is sufficient for the task, but to reach a higher band, you should aim for more precise collocations and a wider variety of sophisticated vocabulary to express complex ideas more naturally.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('A country that rely mostly on its on produce tend to experience') and minor punctuation errors. While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede the overall meaning of the text. To improve, focus on ensuring subject-verb agreement and refining the use of articles and prepositions. The attempt at complex structures is present, but more consistent accuracy in these structures is required for a higher band score.
