Student answer (Band 6.5)

Nowadays, the majority of people are buying locally produced goods instead of imported goods. In my opinion it is a positive trend due to several reasons, which are discussed in upcoming paragraphs.

One of the main reason is that it is time saving. This is because, in these days people are busy in their busy work schedules so they have no time to travel far for buying goods. For example, people can buy fruits, vegetables, and clothes from local market after finish their work. As a result, they save plenty of time, which they can spend with their families. Moreover, individuals also think locally produced food is fresh and healthy. For instance, sometimes they buy food directly from the farmers which is fresh and affordable. Hence, people eat fresh food.

It is a positive development because it boost the economy of local area. If people buy all the products from local markets than it will enhance the revenue of the area. another positive aspect is that it will create more jobs in the local area. For instance, when the sale of local goods will increase then local businesses needs more employees to work with them. As a result, it will lower the unemployment rate and boost the economy of the area.

In conclusion, although sometimes local markets does not provide much variety, it provide fresh goods. So according to me this a positive trend because it saves the time and money of locals. It also allows them to eat fresh food.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: reasons for the trend and whether it is positive or negative. The position is clear throughout. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the argument regarding 'time saving' is a bit weak, as buying locally is not inherently faster than buying imported goods in many contexts. The ideas are relevant but could be extended with more sophisticated reasoning or specific examples. The conclusion provides a summary, but it introduces a new point about 'variety' which was not previously discussed in the body paragraphs, making the argument slightly disjointed.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, and there is a clear progression of ideas. Cohesive devices such as 'one of the main reasons', 'moreover', 'as a result', and 'in conclusion' are used to link sentences and paragraphs. However, some of the transitions feel a bit mechanical or repetitive. The referencing is generally clear, although the connection between the idea of 'time saving' and 'buying locally' could be more explicitly linked to ensure the flow of logic is smoother for the reader.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to communicate their ideas clearly. There is some attempt to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'unemployment rate', 'revenue', and 'locally produced'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there is a reliance on simple phrasing. Some collocations are slightly unnatural, such as 'busy in their busy work schedules'. To reach a higher band, the student should aim to incorporate more precise, less common lexical items and demonstrate a better grasp of natural collocations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'one of the main reason is', 'local businesses needs', 'local markets does not') and article usage. Punctuation is generally functional, but there are minor errors that persist throughout the text. The student demonstrates an ability to construct complex sentences, but the frequency of errors in basic grammar prevents a higher score.
