Student answer (Band 8.0)

In recent years, many consumers have started to prefer locally produced goods instead of imported products. This shift is mainly driven by concerns about quality, the environment, and support for local businesses. I believe this is a positive trend because it benefits both the economy and society.

There are several reasons why people choose local products. Firstly, many consumers believe that locally produced goods are fresher and of higher quality, especially food items such as fruits, vegetables, and dairy products. Secondly, buying local products helps support small businesses and creates employment opportunities within the community. Finally, local goods usually travel shorter distances, which reduces transportation costs and lowers carbon emissions, making them more environmentally friendly.

This is a positive trend for several reasons. When people buy locally made products, money remains within the local economy, allowing businesses to grow and create more jobs. In addition, reduced transportation helps protect the environment by decreasing air pollution and fuel consumption. For example, many people in India prefer purchasing vegetables from nearby farmers' markets instead of buying imported produce because the products are fresher, more affordable, and support local farmers.

However, imported goods still have some advantages. They may offer greater variety or advanced technology that is not available locally. Therefore, consumers should have the freedom to choose the products that best meet their needs.

In conclusion, the growing preference for locally produced goods is mainly due to better quality, environmental benefits, and support for local businesses. Overall, I consider this a positive development because it strengthens the local economy while also benefiting the environment.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, identifying reasons for the trend and clearly stating a position that it is a positive development. The ideas are relevant and supported by logical explanations, such as the economic benefits of keeping money within the community and the environmental impact of reduced transportation. The inclusion of a specific example regarding farmers' markets in India adds depth to the argument. While the discussion of imported goods in the fourth paragraph is brief, it acknowledges the counter-argument effectively. The response is well-balanced and fully satisfies the requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', 'Finally', and 'In addition' are used appropriately to link ideas. The transition between the reasons for the trend and the evaluation of whether it is positive is smooth. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate distinct points, and referencing is clear throughout the text. The overall structure is coherent and supports the development of the argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.5

The vocabulary is sufficient and appropriate for the task. The student uses a range of topic-specific terms such as 'locally produced goods', 'imported products', 'carbon emissions', and 'local economy'. While the vocabulary is functional and accurate, it lacks a high degree of sophistication or 'less common' lexical items that would elevate it to a higher band. However, the word choice is precise, and there are no errors that impede communication. The language is natural and fits the context of the essay well.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.5

The essay demonstrates a good command of grammatical structures. There is a mix of simple and complex sentences, such as 'When people buy locally made products, money remains within the local economy, allowing businesses to grow and create more jobs.' Punctuation is generally accurate, and the sentence construction is clear. There are very few grammatical errors, and the writing is fluent. The control over complex structures is consistent, and the majority of sentences are error-free, which is characteristic of a high-level performance.
