Student answer (Band 7.0)
Due to globalization, international products are easily accessible everywhere. However, these days people are increasingly preferring to buy locally produced products than imported ones. This essay will highlight some of the reasons and I will explain why it is a positive trend.
Firstly, buying goods that are produced in local area will help to grow local companies. As the people opting to buy more local products will generate more sales. This will uplift the local businesses and support many families relying on them. For instance, there are many farmer's markets in Toronto that sell locally produced product. Secondly, local businesses gain more trust and they are more reliable compare to international companies. There are several news about the manufacturing processes and the ingredients they used. Many reports suggest that various chemicals are used that has adverse effect on our body. People are skeptical of those imported good how they are produced and packed. Therefore, people are increasingly favoring goods that are locally produced.
I believe this is a positive trend because it contributes to the local economy. As sales goes up, there need more people to work and this provide more employment opportunities to the local people. For example, during grapes harvesting time, many wineyard in Toronto provides seasonal employment for the locals.
In conclusion, consumers are preferring more to buy from local shops than imported products because they want to support local businesses and they are reluctant about internationally produced goods. This overall is a positive trend as it opens the door for employments and uplift the local economy.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, identifying reasons for the trend (economic growth and trust/safety concerns) and clearly stating a position that it is a positive development. The ideas are relevant and supported by examples, such as farmer's markets and seasonal employment in vineyards. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat brief. To reach a higher band, the arguments could be extended with more depth or analysis regarding the long-term implications of this trend. The position is consistent throughout the essay, and the conclusion effectively summarizes the main points.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central topic, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', 'Therefore', and 'In conclusion' are used to link ideas. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and the use of referencing could be more varied to improve the flow. Paragraphing is used appropriately, and the overall structure supports the reader's understanding of the argument.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'globalization', 'skeptical', and 'adverse effect'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'wineyard' (vineyard) and 'ingredients they used' (ingredients used). The range is sufficient to convey meaning, but more precise or sophisticated vocabulary would be needed for a higher band score. Spelling is generally accurate, though some minor errors persist.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('there need more people', 'many wineyard... provides') and article usage ('the ingredients they used'). Punctuation is generally functional, but the errors in grammar are noticeable and occur throughout the text. Despite these errors, they do not impede communication, and the writer demonstrates a basic control over complex sentence forms.
