Student answer (Band 6.5)

Nowadays, consumerism has become a part of modern lifestyle. A large number of people argue that some consumers are buying goods that are produced by locals in their locality instead of imported goods from another cities or nations. It is a positive trend. The pros outweigh the cons which I will elaborate in this further essay.

First and foremost, people generally choose to purchase goods from their community to help them financially. The most significant factor is trust amongst them. For example, individuals in rural areas usually sale their products to nearby markets. Therefore, people tends to buy these goods because they know the goods are trustworthy and not contaminated.

Besides this, all the nations have been focusing more on exporting of the goods rather than importing them because it helps to boost the economy of the country. For example, Indian Prime Minister has started a model called 'MAKE IN INDIA' which inspired the community to make all the products within India which ultimately improves the economy and reduces the burden on Indian currency.

However, we cannot ignore its drawbacks. It would keep people unaware about the trends, quality and varieties of the products and goods of the another nations. Plus, Imported goods are usually cheaper. because countries like China make products which are the cheapest and they export their goods in all over the world.

All in all, although imported goods and cheaper and have more varieties, some people urge to buy local goods because they find them trustable, convenient and especially peoples' willingness to help local businesses is a positive change in the society.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the reasons for buying local and the evaluation of the trend. The position is clear from the introduction. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. While you mention financial support and trust as reasons, the explanation could be more detailed. The discussion on the 'positive or negative' aspect is present, but the arguments regarding the drawbacks (lack of variety and higher costs) are slightly underdeveloped compared to the benefits. To reach a higher band, ensure that each point is fully extended with more nuanced analysis or specific, well-explained examples rather than brief mentions.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized into paragraphs, each with a clear focus. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'First and foremost', 'Besides this', and 'However' to signal transitions between ideas. While the progression is generally clear, some transitions feel a bit mechanical. The referencing is mostly accurate, though there are minor issues with flow between sentences in the third paragraph. Overall, the structure is easy to follow, and the paragraphing is appropriate for the task. To improve, try to incorporate a wider variety of cohesive devices to link sentences more fluidly.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'consumerism', 'financially', and 'contaminated' appropriately. There are some instances of slightly unnatural phrasing, such as 'produced by locals in their locality' (redundant) and 'another cities'. Additionally, there are minor errors in word choice, such as 'sale' instead of 'sell' and 'peoples' willingness' (should be 'people's'). While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the vocabulary from being considered 'wide' or 'sophisticated'. Focus on learning collocations and ensuring word forms are used correctly in context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('people tends to buy') and article usage ('the another nations'). Punctuation is generally functional, though there are some issues with sentence fragments and capitalization (e.g., 'Imported goods are usually cheaper. because...'). While the meaning is always clear, the frequency of these errors suggests that you have not yet achieved full control over complex structures. To improve, focus on proofreading for basic subject-verb agreement and ensuring that complex sentences are punctuated correctly.
