Student answer (Band 6.0)

Some buyers are increasingly choosing to purchase goods that are produced in their local area rather than imported ones. The reason behind same is that local products are cheaper than imported ones. According to my perspective, it is a positive trend as it boosts economic growth of the country.

To begin with, products that are manufactured with local material are less expensive than the ones that are manufactured outside the country or for which material is imported from other countries as they do not have to pay taxes to other countries government. Moreover, these goods are made with original material not with mixed material that some big businesses do to save money as they already have well reputed brand name. For instance, the T-shirt some local manufacturer will use pure cotton produced in local farm to manufacture them meanwhile brands like Levi's they mostly use half cotton and half polyester but refer it as pure cotton as it is a brand name nobody cares and cost for branded one is more than the local produced T-shirt.

Further as more and more people are increasingly choosing the good produced in local areas it is a positive trend as it helps to generate more business for local producers as a result many employment opportunities are created. Consequently, the GDP of country is also improved. The taxes should also not be there thus making the product cheaper and the material used is the pure one.

In summary, Buying products produced by local manufacturer rather than the imported products from different countries is a positive trend and it contributes to economic growth of the country.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: reasons for the trend and whether it is positive or negative. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. The argument regarding price is repetitive, and the example provided about Levi's is anecdotal and lacks sufficient depth to fully support the claim. While the position is clear, the explanation of the economic benefits is quite brief and could have been expanded with more sophisticated reasoning regarding sustainability or supply chain efficiency. To reach a higher band, ensure that each main point is fully explored with more nuanced analysis rather than relying on generalisations.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, and there is a clear progression of ideas. Cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Moreover', and 'Consequently' are used to link sentences and paragraphs. However, some of the transitions feel slightly mechanical, and there are instances where the flow is interrupted by awkward phrasing, such as 'The reason behind same is that'. Referencing is generally clear, but the overall structure would benefit from more varied cohesive devices to improve the natural flow of the argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks the range and precision required for higher bands. There is some repetition of basic terms like 'products', 'goods', and 'manufactured'. While the student attempts to use some topic-specific vocabulary, such as 'economic growth' and 'GDP', there are errors in collocation and word choice, such as 'original material' instead of 'high-quality materials' or 'natural ingredients'. The phrasing 'The reason behind same' is non-standard and detracts from the professional tone of the essay.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('the GDP of country', 'the T-shirt some local manufacturer') and pluralisation. Some sentences are overly long and lack correct punctuation, which makes them difficult to follow. For example, the sentence starting with 'For instance' is a run-on sentence that lacks necessary commas or conjunctions to manage the complex information. Improving control over sentence boundaries and article usage is essential for a higher score.
