Student answer (Band 8.0)
In recent years, an increasing number of consumers have chosen to purchase goods produced in their local areas rather than imported products. This shift can be attributed to growing environmental awareness and a desire to support domestic economies. In my opinion, this is an overwhelmingly positive trend because it benefits local communities while also promoting sustainable consumption.
There are several reasons why people are becoming more inclined to buy locally produced goods. One major factor is the desire to support the local economy. When consumers purchase products made by domestic manufacturers or local farmers, they help create employment opportunities, stimulate economic growth, and ensure that money circulates within the community. This, in turn, strengthens small businesses and enhances economic resilience. Another important reason is the increasing awareness of environmental issues. Imported goods often travel thousands of kilometres before reaching consumers, resulting in substantial carbon emissions from transportation. By choosing locally sourced products, individuals can reduce their carbon footprint and contribute to environmental sustainability.
I believe that this is a highly positive development for several reasons. Firstly, buying local products encourages sustainable production and consumption. Shorter supply chains not only reduce greenhouse gas emissions but also minimize excessive packaging and food waste. Secondly, locally produced goods are often fresher and subject to stricter quality control, particularly in the case of agricultural products. As a result, consumers are more likely to recieve high-quality goods while supporting ethical business practices. Furthermore, a strong domestic market enables local businesses to invest in innovation, improve product quality, and remain competitive in the long term.
In conclusion, people are increasingly buying locally produced goods because they wish to support domestic businesses and reduce environmental harm. Since this trend promotes economic prosperity, environmental sustainability, and higher-quality products, it should be regarded as a positive development that deserves continued encouragement.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The response fully addresses all parts of the prompt. You clearly identify the reasons for the trend—economic support and environmental awareness—and provide a well-supported opinion that it is a positive development. The ideas are extended logically, such as the link between shorter supply chains and reduced carbon footprints. The position is consistent throughout the essay, and the arguments are relevant and well-developed. You have successfully balanced the two parts of the question, ensuring that both the 'reasons' and the 'positive/negative' aspects are given sufficient attention, meeting the requirements for a high band score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the progression of ideas is smooth. You make effective use of cohesive devices such as 'In recent years', 'One major factor', 'This, in turn', and 'Furthermore', which help guide the reader through your argument. The paragraphing is logical and contributes to the overall clarity of the text. The transition between the reasons for the trend and your opinion on its positive nature is seamless, demonstrating a high level of control over the structure of the essay.
Lexical Resource — Band 8.0
You demonstrate a wide and flexible range of vocabulary that is appropriate for the task. Phrases such as 'economic resilience', 'sustainable consumption', 'shorter supply chains', and 'ethical business practices' show a sophisticated command of language. The word choice is precise and contributes to the professional tone of the essay. There is only one minor spelling error ('recieve' instead of 'receive'), which does not impede communication. The vocabulary is used naturally and accurately throughout the response, reflecting a strong lexical range.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0
The essay displays a wide range of grammatical structures, including complex sentences and varied clause types. The majority of your sentences are error-free, and your control over punctuation and tense is excellent. For example, the use of conditional-like structures and participial phrases ('resulting in substantial carbon emissions') shows a high level of grammatical competence. The few minor slips, such as the spelling error noted, are non-systematic and do not affect the clarity or flow of the writing. The overall grammatical accuracy is very high.
