IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some consumers are increasingly choosing to buy goods that are produced in their local area, rather than imported goods.

What are the reasons for this?

Is this a positive or a negative trend?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Some customers are consuming locally produced goods than imported products. This could be due to easy accessibility and cost-effectiveness of domestic produce. In my opinion, this trend has both merits and drawbacks as locally produced goods can support small scale businesses and boost a country's economy. However, it will also result in high-priced products due to insufficient supply of resources.

People prefer to buy domestic goods because these are easily accessible due to their high supply. These goods are available at every local store. It increases comfort and convenience. Additionally, these goods are also inexpensive as these goods are exempt from import duties or international shipping charges. Therefore, it saves consumer's money.

In my opinion, this trend is positive as it helps the local businesses to grow. It can help them to make profits and increase their scale of operation over time. In this way, it will also contribute in the economic growth of a country. For example, In India, Prime Minister has promoted domestic produced automobiles over international vehicles. It is projected that the GDP will increase by 15% in next three years.

On the other hand, this trend has some disadvantages as locally produced goods can be expensive due to insufficient supply of resources in the area. For example, Canada has not much resources in Technology. It is relied on United States to import the electronics. If it will try to produce them locally, Canada will have to invest much money in technology, which will consequently increase the prices of electronics than the imported devices.

In conclusion, tough the locally produced goods are easily available and can support small scale businesses. However, it can sometimes expensive to produce goods domestically. therefore, imported goods also play a role in a sustainable economy.
