Student answer (Band 6.0)

These days, buyers prefer to buy goods from the local shops instead of buying imported goods. There are some causes of this trend such as supporting local businesses and less cost. From my perspective, this is positive trend for owners as well for buyers.

First and foremost, one of the reasons is consumers can support local and small businesses. To simplify it, by buying goods from small businesses or local businesses consumers can encourage them and could financially support them to increase their sales. For example, when producers launched an Indian brand named Patanjali, people initially did not try the product. However, now it is one of the most used and most liked products in India.

Secondly, using imported products can cost more than local products. To explain it, buyers need to pay extra delivery costs and have to pay more taxes than local products. To escape from extra cost buyers prefer to consume local goods. In this way buyers give chance to improve their quality and productivity.

Despite having positive points there is one considerable drawback. Due to financial issue or to support local products, Consumers often miss chance to buy good quality products or diverse products. Besides this, this trend can impact on transport industries which can also effect employment in some sectors.

To conclude it, this trend has positive aspects as buying local products can support emotionally and financially local business owners as well as can reduce extra costs of deliveries and other costs. On the other hand, it can effect foreign businesses and can also effect transport sector.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt: it identifies reasons for the trend (supporting local businesses and cost-effectiveness) and provides a clear position that it is a positive trend. The ideas are relevant, though the development is somewhat basic. For instance, the example of the Indian brand 'Patanjali' is a good attempt to support the argument, but the explanation of the negative impacts on transport and employment is a bit superficial. To reach a higher band, you should aim to expand on your points with more detailed analysis or broader implications, ensuring that the 'negative' side of the trend is balanced more effectively against the 'positive' side.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use cohesive devices such as 'First and foremost', 'Secondly', and 'On the other hand' to signal transitions between ideas. However, some of the linking is slightly mechanical, and the flow between sentences could be improved for better cohesion. For example, the transition between the benefits of local products and the drawbacks could be smoother. Paragraphing is used appropriately, which helps the reader follow your argument, but the internal structure of the paragraphs could be more sophisticated to achieve a higher score.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is generally adequate for the task, allowing you to express your ideas clearly. You use some topic-specific terms like 'imported goods', 'productivity', and 'transport industries'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there is some repetition of basic words like 'goods', 'products', and 'costs'. To improve, try to incorporate more varied synonyms and collocations. For instance, instead of repeating 'cost', you could use 'expenditure', 'financial burden', or 'price premiums'. There are no significant errors in word choice that impede communication, but the vocabulary lacks the precision and variety required for a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors throughout the text. For example, 'this is positive trend' should be 'this is a positive trend', and 'it can effect foreign businesses' should use the verb 'affect' instead of the noun 'effect'. Additionally, some phrasing is slightly awkward, such as 'To escape from extra cost'. While these errors do not prevent understanding, they occur frequently enough to limit your score. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement, the correct use of articles, and distinguishing between commonly confused words like 'affect' and 'effect'.
