Student answer (Band 6.0)

Nowdays, many consumers prefer to buy products that are made in their local area instead of imported goods. There are several reasons for this change and I believe that it is a positive trend.

One main reason is that local products are often fresh and more reliable. For example, people may prefer to buy vegetables, fruits and dairy products from local farmers because these products are do not travel long distance and available easily on low cost. Another reason is that buying local goods support local businesses and creat more jobs people in the community.

I believe this is a positive development for both individual and society. When people buy local products more money stay in local economy. Small businesses and farmers can earn more money and continue their work. This can also help reduce unemployment in the area. Moreover, buying local products can reduce pollution caused by transporting goods from other countries.

However, imported goods can sometimes be cheaper and offer more choices. Therefore, consumers should have the freedom to choose between local and imported products. In my opinion, choosing local goods more often is beneficial because it supports the economy and helps local workers.

In conclusion, people are choosing local products because they are often fresh and helpful to the local economy.Overall, I consider this trend to be positive.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: reasons for buying local and the opinion on whether it is a positive trend. However, the essay is significantly under the 250-word minimum, which limits the depth of development. While the ideas are relevant, they are somewhat brief. For instance, the environmental argument is mentioned but not fully explored. To reach a higher band, you should expand on your examples and provide more detailed explanations for your points. The position is clear throughout, but the lack of length prevents a more thorough exploration of the topic.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each with a central theme. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'One main reason', 'Another reason', 'Moreover', and 'In conclusion' to guide the reader. However, the transitions are somewhat mechanical and the flow between sentences could be more sophisticated. The paragraphing is appropriate, but the overall structure feels a bit repetitive due to the limited length. To improve, try to vary your linking words and ensure that ideas within paragraphs are connected more fluidly rather than just listed.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks variety and precision. You use common terms like 'fresh', 'reliable', and 'cheaper' effectively, but there is little evidence of less common or idiomatic language. There are some minor errors in word formation, such as 'creat' instead of 'create' and 'on low cost' instead of 'at a low cost'. To achieve a higher score, aim to incorporate more topic-specific vocabulary related to economics and sustainability, such as 'supply chain', 'carbon footprint', or 'economic sustainability'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'these products are do not travel' (incorrect verb construction) and 'more money stay' (subject-verb agreement). Additionally, there are punctuation and spelling issues, such as 'Nowdays' and missing spaces after commas. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and ensure that your complex sentences are constructed accurately. Increasing the variety of your sentence structures will also help demonstrate better control over English grammar.
