Student answer (Band 6.0)

Certain end users are rapidly willing to purchase products that are made in their local communities, rather than internationally. This essay will discuss this is happening and why this is a positive trend.

One significant reason why I consider this as positive trend is that buying goods from local areas help in improving the economy in the country. For example, beans are mostly grown in the northern part of Nigeria and can be exported to other countries like Chad, Benin Republic, Ghana in order to generate income for Nigeria. Also it reduces spoilage of goods that are imported. For instance, fruits like strawberries, banana which has a short lifespan especially when in an enclosed space during packaging can spoil which can affect the fruits being imported.

Also, goods produced in the local areas tend to be less expensive than imported goods. To illustrate, A bag of rice made in Nigeria is 70,000 Naira but foreign-made rice is 150,000 naira because of the amount used in shipping the product and also customs clearance is added. Furthermore, there will be reduction of taxes that will be made in the African nations union (ANU). For example, I was once a member of this union and some payment are made for imported goods every year.

In conclusion, I believe consumers choosing to buy goods that are produced in local areas is a positive trend because it help to improve economy, it avoid spoilage, reduction of taxes and create more opportunities for local businesses and convenience for consumers.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the reasons for buying local and the evaluation of the trend. However, the development of ideas is somewhat uneven. While you provide specific examples like the price of rice in Nigeria, the explanation regarding the 'African nations union' is vague and does not clearly link to the prompt's focus on local versus imported goods. The position is clear throughout, but the arguments could be more thoroughly extended to reach a higher band. Ensure that every point made directly supports your stance on why this is a positive trend.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, and there is a clear introduction and conclusion. You use some cohesive devices such as 'One significant reason', 'Also', and 'Furthermore' to link ideas. However, the flow between sentences is occasionally mechanical, and some transitions feel abrupt. For instance, the jump from discussing spoilage to the price of rice lacks a smooth connecting thought. Additionally, the referencing is sometimes unclear, such as the mention of the 'ANU' without sufficient context for the reader to understand its relevance to the argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing you to convey your meaning clearly. You use some topic-specific terms like 'exported', 'spoilage', and 'customs clearance'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there are instances of slightly unnatural phrasing, such as 'certain end users' instead of 'some consumers' or 'rapidly willing'. To improve, try to incorporate more precise collocations and a wider variety of academic vocabulary to express your ideas with greater sophistication and nuance.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('buying goods... help in improving' should be 'helps') and article usage ('the economy in the country' vs 'the national economy'). Some sentences are slightly awkward, such as 'some payment are made'. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on proofreading for basic agreement and pluralization errors.
