Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is often argued that many people believe that purchasing local good is correct way to stay and help local, while others believe that is more appropriate if we go for imported stuff. Although both the perspectives have their own merits, this essay will discuss both views before explaining why I believe local produced are more convincing.

On the one hand, there several people who support the idea of promoting the local goods. Firstly, the produced are grown and manufactured in the same environment and with local raw material. This ultimately aids local famers and manufacturers not only in terms of financial aspects but also leads to their overall growth. Lastly, buying local stuff assists the local shops to even expand more up to national level which subsequently results in increasing the overall GDP. For instance, In China the individuals always tends to buy things locally which resulted in a sharp raise up to almost 30% in their economy.

On the other hand, many people believe that purchasing imported things are better approach. On key reason is that sometimes local food can lack in providing some essential nutrients such as Vitamin C and so on. This is the reason why individuals try to buy imported stuff in order to fulfill the nutritional requirements. Another notable reason is that the government always wants to keep the strong relation with foreign countries. Therefore, it promotes the importation of foreign goods. This leads to increase in purchase of stuff made from foreign countries.

In conclusion, some people believe that it always healthy option to have locally owned food, while others argue in favor of made abroad goods. Taking everything in account, I firmly believe that local grown food are healthy for body and for country because it is more practical and beneficial options.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the reasons for buying local and the evaluation of the trend. However, the development is somewhat uneven. While the reasons for buying local are clear, the discussion on imported goods is less focused, particularly the point about government relations, which feels slightly tangential. The position is clear throughout, but the arguments could be more deeply extended with more specific, logical examples. The example regarding China's GDP is a bit vague and lacks a clear connection to the specific trend of local versus imported goods. Overall, the response covers the requirements but lacks the depth required for a higher band.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized into paragraphs, each with a clear central topic. Cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'Firstly', and 'In conclusion' are used to guide the reader. However, the use of these devices is sometimes mechanical or slightly repetitive. There are also instances where the flow between sentences is slightly disjointed, such as the transition between the nutritional argument and the government policy argument in the second body paragraph. Paragraphing is used appropriately, and the progression of ideas is generally easy to follow, though the logical links could be more sophisticated.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There is an attempt to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'manufactured', 'raw material', and 'nutritional requirements'. However, there are several instances of awkward phrasing and word choice errors, such as 'local good' instead of 'local goods', 'local produced' instead of 'locally produced', and 'made abroad goods' instead of 'imported goods'. These errors do not impede communication, but they do limit the range and precision of the language, preventing a higher score in this criterion.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the writer attempts complex sentences, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement ('the produced are grown', 'individuals always tends') and article usage ('the individuals always tends to buy things locally'). Punctuation is generally acceptable, but there are minor slips throughout the text. The errors are noticeable but rarely impede the reader's understanding of the intended meaning. To improve, the writer should focus on proofreading for basic agreement and ensuring that complex structures are used with greater accuracy.
