Student answer (Band 8.0)
In recent years, an increasing number of consumers have preferred to purchase locally produced goods instead of imported products. This trend can be attributed to several factors, and I believe it is largely positive because it benefits both local economies and the environment.
One major reason for this preference is that consumers often want to support businesses in their own communities. Buying locally produced goods helps small companies and farmers generate income, create employment and remain competitive. In addition, local products are often perceived as fresher and more trustworthy because consumers may have greater knowledge of where and how they are produced. For example, many people prefer to buy fruit and vegetables from nearby farms because these products are usually harvested more recently and require less transportation before reaching shops.
Another factor is growing environmental awareness. Imported goods often have to travel long distances by ship, plane or truck, which can result in considerable carbon emissions. Choosing locally manufactured or grown products can reduce the environmental costs associated with transportation. Furthermore, some consumers believe that local producers are more likely to use traditional methods and higher-quality ingredients, particularly in areas where locally made food has a strong reputation.
Overall, I consider this to be a positive development. Economically, greater demand for local products can strengthen communities by keeping money within the local economy and providing jobs. Environmentally, reducing the distance goods travel can help lower emissions and, in some cases, reduce excessive packaging. There can also be social benefits, as consumers may develop a stronger connection with local producers and traditions.
Admittedly, imported goods can sometimes be cheaper or offer greater variety, and completely avoiding imports is neither practical nor necessary. Nevertheless, provided that consumers make informed choices rather than rejecting foreign products entirely, the growing popularity of local goods is a beneficial trend.
In conclusion, people are increasingly buying locally produced goods because they want to support their communities, obtain fresh and reliable products, and reduce environmental damage. In my view, the economic, environmental and social advantages make this a predominantly positive trend.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The response fully addresses all parts of the prompt. You clearly identify the reasons for the trend—economic support for local communities and environmental awareness—and provide a well-supported argument for why this is a positive development. The position is consistent throughout the essay, and the ideas are extended with relevant examples, such as the freshness of local produce and the reduction of carbon emissions from long-distance transport. The conclusion effectively synthesizes the main points, ensuring the response is balanced and comprehensive. The development of ideas is logical and meets the requirements for a high band score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the transition between paragraphs is smooth. You use a variety of cohesive devices effectively, such as 'In addition', 'Furthermore', 'Overall', and 'Nevertheless', which help guide the reader through your argument. The paragraphing is appropriate, with a clear introduction, body paragraphs focusing on distinct reasons, and a concise conclusion. The use of referencing is precise, and the flow of information is natural throughout the text, demonstrating a high level of control over the structure of the essay.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.5
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary that is appropriate for the task. Phrases like 'environmental awareness', 'carbon emissions', and 'excessive packaging' are used accurately and in the correct context. While the vocabulary is generally precise and natural, there is room to incorporate more sophisticated or less common lexical items to reach the highest band. For instance, instead of 'good' or 'positive', you could occasionally use more nuanced adjectives. However, the current range is sufficient to convey your ideas clearly and effectively, and there are no errors in word choice or collocation that impede communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0
The essay displays a wide range of grammatical structures, including complex sentences and varied clause types. The majority of your sentences are error-free, and your control over punctuation is excellent. You successfully use conditional structures ('provided that consumers make...') and relative clauses to add depth to your arguments. There are no significant grammatical errors, and the few slips are rare and do not affect the clarity of your writing. The overall accuracy is high, and the variety of structures used demonstrates a strong command of English grammar suitable for an advanced level.
