Student answer (Band 6.5)

There is debate over the issue that people prefer to purchase goods that are made from local products, and by local people instead of buying the imported goods. There are a number of reasons associated with this. However, I personally feel that it has a positive impact on society. The following paragraphs will elucidate the reason, and my personal perspective about this trend.

One of the main reasons is authenticity. Skeptics prefer to buy organic and local products because they know about the production of the products, and they are fresher than imported goods. To substantiate it, wheat is grown in Northern parts of India, and farmers have vast knowledge about the fertilizers. Therefore, it is produced under supervision and with authentic methods. Secondly, local products are cheaper than imported goods. They are free from custom charges and handling charges. The products which are imported from other countries such as fruits and vegetables are usually frozen. Nobody knows about the production of these goods. Moreover, companies add harmful preservatives to protect the goods from damage. It has negative effects on health. For example, the grapes that are imported from Fiji, they have a layer of white color product, which does not go away after washing thoroughly. From my perspective, products grown locally are healthier, and have more nutritional values rather than the frozen foods that are exported from other countries.

To conclude this, globalization has made bring comfort in people life, however, sometimes the excessive use of imported products can cause issues in one's life. People can try the imported goods, but they need to give more priority to locally grown products.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: reasons for buying local and the opinion on whether it is a positive trend. The ideas regarding authenticity and cost are relevant and supported with examples, such as the wheat farming in India. However, the development is somewhat uneven. The discussion on the negative aspects of imported goods, particularly the example of grapes from Fiji, is a bit anecdotal and could have been more balanced with broader economic or environmental arguments. The position is clear throughout, but the conclusion is slightly abrupt and does not fully synthesize the points made in the body paragraphs.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'One of the main reasons', 'Secondly', and 'To conclude this', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical or repetitive. For instance, the link between the introduction and the first body paragraph could be smoother. Referencing is generally clear, though there are minor issues with sentence-level flow, such as the phrasing 'made bring comfort in people life', which disrupts the logical progression of the final paragraph.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the student to express ideas clearly. There are attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'authenticity', 'preservatives', and 'nutritional values'. However, there are instances of awkward word choice and collocation errors, such as 'made bring comfort' instead of 'brought comfort' and 'white color product' instead of 'white residue'. The range is sufficient to convey meaning, but it lacks the precision and flexibility required for a higher band score. The repetition of 'products' and 'goods' also limits the lexical variety.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede the flow. Examples include 'There is debate over the issue that people prefer' (clunky phrasing), 'grapes that are imported from Fiji, they have' (redundant subject), and 'nutritional values rather than the frozen foods' (incorrect comparative structure). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are minor errors in article usage and verb tense consistency. The student demonstrates control over basic structures, but complex sentences often contain minor errors.
