Student answer (Band 7.0)
Many customers are opting to shop for local products instead of buying foreign products. The driving factors are a demand for fresh produce and a desire to support local businesses. In my view, it is a favourable development as it is beneficial for both the environment and the economy.
The primary catalyst behind this phenomenon is the rising demand for fresh produce. Since people are becoming more and more health conscious, they prefer to buy fresh organic produce from the local farmers instead of the preserved imported ones. Furthermore, the recent changes in global economy has reinforced public desire to strengthen their local economies. As a result they want to support local businesses by purchasing locally produced goods. For instance, the recent introduction of global tariffs by the USA government has inspired many Canadians to buy locally produced goods.
In my view, it is definitely a fruitful development because it is environmentally sustainable and economically beneficial. This is because an incline in domestic goods means fewer imports of the foreign products and shorter supply chains, which reduces the emissions and packaging waste from the transportation of imported commodities. In addition, strengthening of local businesses uplifts the nation's economy by making a country self-reliant. Since to fulfill the growing needs of the public, the state provides financial assistance to local farmers and
factories. As a result, both regional and national economies flourish by leaps and bounds. Therefore, this practice not only reduces environmental emissions but also promotes economic growth.
In conclusion, while citizens shop for local goods for health benefits and to support local businesses, it positively impacts environment and strengthens national economies. Hence, I believe it is a constructive approach which will make a nation self-sufficient.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, identifying clear reasons for the trend (health consciousness and economic support) and providing a firm position that it is a positive development. The ideas are relevant and generally well-developed. For example, the explanation regarding shorter supply chains and reduced emissions effectively supports the environmental argument. While the explanation of economic benefits is slightly repetitive in the third paragraph, the overall position remains clear and consistent throughout the essay. The response is well-structured and meets all requirements of the task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'As a result', and 'In addition' are used effectively to guide the reader through the arguments. Paragraphing is used appropriately, with each paragraph focusing on a distinct aspect of the prompt. The progression of ideas is smooth, and the relationship between the reasons and the positive impacts is clearly established. The use of referencing is generally accurate, contributing to the overall coherence of the piece.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary is sufficient and appropriate for the task. The student uses topic-specific terms such as 'health conscious', 'environmentally sustainable', 'supply chains', and 'self-reliant' with good control. There are some minor issues with collocation, such as 'incline in domestic goods' (an increase) and 'flourish by leaps and bounds' (which is slightly idiomatic/informal for an academic task). However, the range is adequate to convey precise meaning, and the errors do not impede communication or cause confusion for the reader.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The student demonstrates a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'the recent changes in global economy has' (subject-verb agreement error: 'have') and 'Since to fulfill the growing needs' (a sentence fragment). Despite these occasional errors, the majority of the sentences are error-free, and the meaning is always clear. The use of complex structures, such as conditional-like reasoning and subordinate clauses, shows a good level of control, justifying a solid score in this criterion.
