Student answer (Band 6.0)

Nowadays, It has become increasingly common for people to choose to buy stuff from their local area instead of taking and buying imported goods. This behaviour is mainly encouraged by the wish to support their local businesses and farms. Although local product market keeps the identity of country's production, I believe that purchasing imported goods are largely a positive trend development.

One reason for this trend is that local farms often holds and stores an unique national production formula. People who prefer to buy things from the local stores and markets are usually more conservative in terms of their purchasing habits and life style. In instance, generation of people could buy from only one or a few local brands because their products have always been their. They simply get used to traditions to buy something which always been there and never require a replacement.

However, conservative mind could potentially harm those customers who wants to get a new product experience. An imported goods can help us to make our life more interesting and diversed. Various products from abroad demonstrates perspective view to a different consumer world. For example, people who wants to change their fashion style often can not find a right clothing in their local shops, so they decide to take a look on an imported analogues for the best outfit look. This idea can enhance our satisfaction to get the desired item.

In conclusion, supporting local businesses may help us to get the most basic needs and adapted working solutions. Nevertheless, there are more positive advantages to have and buy imported goods because people will always have a choice and options in their lives.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the reasons for buying local and the evaluation of whether this is a positive or negative trend. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. The explanation regarding 'conservative' habits is a bit repetitive, and the argument for imported goods relies on a narrow example of fashion. To reach a higher band, you should provide more nuanced reasons, such as economic impacts or environmental concerns (food miles), and ensure your position is more clearly sustained throughout the essay. The conclusion is a bit simplistic and does not fully synthesize the points made in the body paragraphs.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into clear paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the progression of ideas. You use some cohesive devices like 'However' and 'In conclusion' to signal transitions. However, the flow within paragraphs is sometimes hindered by awkward phrasing, such as 'In instance, generation of people could buy from only one...'. Additionally, some referencing is unclear, such as the use of 'this idea' in the third paragraph, which does not clearly link back to the previous sentence. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that each sentence logically follows the previous one will improve your score.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

Your vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, but it lacks the precision and flexibility required for higher bands. You use some informal language like 'stuff' and 'take a look on', which is inappropriate for an IELTS essay. There are also errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'positive trend development' (redundant) and 'imported analogues' (unnatural). To improve, focus on using more academic collocations and precise terminology. Avoid colloquialisms and ensure you are using words in their correct context to convey your meaning more effectively.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('local farms often holds', 'imported goods are... a positive trend'), article misuse ('an unique', 'an imported goods'), and awkward phrasing ('never require a replacement'). While the meaning is generally clear, these persistent errors in basic grammar prevent the essay from reaching a higher band. You should focus on proofreading for subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles and pluralization.
