Student answer (Band 6.0)

A significant number of consumers are today inclined to buy products which are manufactured within their own countries or regions. This seems to be a positive step taken up by the buyers today.

From past many years, number of countries were dependent upon other nations to fulfill their citizen's need. The needs varies from consumable to non-consumable products. To elaborate, let us consider a example. A developed nation like, Australia is completely dependent upon China for number of items like, clothes, furniture or any item made of plastic. This is because Australia has not a single industry in its land, therefore to cope with the need of its citizen it is completely dependent on China. Hence, in a way Australia is responsible for economical growth of China, either directly or indirectly. It would be better if Australia could think of becoming self-independent by producing products within its own territory. This way rather than boosting other country economy, Australia could have become self-independent.

Conversely, there are many countries who strongly believe that people of their nation, should never relay and use any of the imported goods. One of the major country, which has taken step in this direction is India. The government of India has initiated a major project of "Make in India" in 2023. This was initiated to make India self-dependent and to ensure that its citizen completely buy and consume goods which are made in India. When an individual buy a good which is produced in its own country, that individual is contributing in the economical growth of its country. When any nation grow economically, it impacts its GDP (Gross Domestic Product), which take nation one step closer to become developed country. Moreover, to ensure that buyers buy the local products many countries have made policies where all goods owner should mention the manufacturing details of products on their labels, irrespective whether the product is sold online or offline methods.

At the end, making countries fully independent completely is in the hands of consumers. The consumers must support their own countries by spending their money in buying local products. This way they will be contributing making their own countries self-sufficient.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the reasons for buying local and the opinion on whether it is a positive trend. However, the development of ideas is somewhat uneven. The example regarding Australia is factually inaccurate and over-generalized, as it claims Australia has 'not a single industry,' which weakens the argument. The discussion on India is more relevant, but the link between the 'Make in India' initiative and the consumer's role could be more deeply explored. The position is clear throughout, but the supporting arguments lack the depth required for a higher band score.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a central theme. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Conversely,' 'Moreover,' and 'To elaborate,' though some transitions feel a bit mechanical. The progression of ideas is generally clear, but the referencing is occasionally imprecise, such as the use of 'that individual' and 'its country' which creates some ambiguity. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the reasons from the evaluation of the trend, which helps the reader follow the argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the student to convey their meaning clearly. There are attempts to use less common items like 'self-sufficient,' 'economical growth,' and 'initiated,' but there are also persistent errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'economical growth' (should be 'economic growth') and 'relay' (should be 'rely'). The range is sufficient to discuss the topic, but the lack of precision in word choice prevents a higher score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('a example,' 'the economical growth'), subject-verb agreement ('The needs varies'), and pluralization ('number of countries were dependent'). While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to be noticeable. The control over complex structures is inconsistent, and the punctuation is generally functional but occasionally lacks sophistication.
