Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response addresses both parts of the prompt, identifying reasons for the trend and discussing whether it is positive or negative. However, the development of ideas is inconsistent. While the reasons for buying local are touched upon, the explanation regarding the economic impact and the risks of imports is somewhat unclear and lacks logical depth. The position is generally clear, but the argument could be more effectively supported with more precise examples. The essay meets the minimum length requirement, but the analysis remains superficial in several areas, particularly in the second body paragraph where the connection between weather, shipping, and economic loss is difficult to follow.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or inaccurate. For instance, the transition 'However, it gives positive effect' is confusing because it follows a paragraph that already discusses benefits. Referencing is sometimes unclear, such as the use of 'they' and 'it' without clear antecedents. While there is an attempt at logical progression, the flow between sentences is frequently interrupted by awkward phrasing and a lack of sophisticated linking words, which limits the overall coherence of the argument.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the range and precision required for a higher band. There are several instances of awkward word choice and collocation errors, such as 'imported costly things', 'destroy of staying numbers of days', and 'its give totally lose'. The student relies on basic vocabulary and struggles to express more complex ideas accurately. While the meaning is generally conveyed, the frequent errors in word formation and collocation occasionally impede the reader's understanding of the intended message.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors throughout. Common issues include subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'owner buy', 'thy sell there products'), incorrect article usage, and punctuation errors. Complex sentence attempts, such as 'if owner does contract with farmer about vegetables and fruits which grow in farm', are often faulty and contain structural inaccuracies. While the errors do not completely prevent communication, they are persistent and occur in almost every sentence, which significantly impacts the clarity of the writing.
