Student answer (Band 7.0)

In this modern era, the consumers are showing more interest in locally produced products over imported goods. There can be many social, economic and environmental reasons which attribute to the growth of this trend. Therefore, growth of local goods consumption is a largely positive development.

One of the staple reason why people have started to buy goods from local markets is that they want to support their community and growth of local business. These small-scale businesses contribute towards the economic growth of the country by increasing employment opportunities and decreasing the export duties. Apart from this, the customers can trust the local markets for the quality of food and other products. The local farmers usually follow traditional practices for the growth of their fruits and vegetables and these products are sold to the customers directly. Therefore, there is no interference of other industries in the market resulting in high profit margins for the farmers. Thus, it is a win-win situation for producers as well as consumers. Eventually, the growth of local market helps in maintaining sustainable environment. This can be explained in the terms that if the products are manufactured locally then their transportation distance will be less. Consequently, the carbon footprint caused by the trucks for the transportation of these goods will decrease to a great extent, making the environment clean.

Overall, this is a utterly positive development since it benefits the society socially, economically as well as environmentally.

In conclusion, the increasing consumer interest in local goods benefits the society and the planet in all the possible ways. While, this interest can cause some inflation, but this price is not worth comparing the benefits offered by this trend.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt: it identifies reasons for the trend (supporting local business, trust in quality, environmental benefits) and clearly states a position that it is a positive development. The ideas are relevant and generally well-developed, particularly the environmental argument regarding carbon footprints. However, the explanation of economic benefits is slightly repetitive, and the mention of inflation in the conclusion is a new point that should have been integrated into the body paragraphs for better development. Overall, the response is focused and maintains a clear position throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'Apart from this', 'Consequently', and 'Therefore' are used effectively to link ideas. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct arguments. However, the transition between the final body paragraph and the conclusion is slightly abrupt, and the concluding paragraph contains a minor structural issue by introducing a new point about inflation that was not previously discussed. Despite these minor issues, the progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is generally appropriate and sufficient for the task. The student uses topic-specific terms such as 'carbon footprint', 'sustainable environment', and 'economic growth' effectively. There are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'staple reason' (should be 'primary reason') and 'interference of other industries' (which is slightly awkward phrasing). The phrase 'utterly positive' is also a bit informal for an IELTS essay. While the range is adequate to convey meaning clearly, it lacks the sophistication and precision required for a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The student demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'the consumers are showing' (unnecessary article), 'One of the staple reason' (should be 'reasons'), and 'in the terms that' (should be 'in terms of'). Punctuation is generally correct, but there are minor issues with article usage and subject-verb agreement. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. The student shows a good attempt at complex sentences, but control over these structures is not yet fully consistent.
