IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some consumers are increasingly choosing to buy goods that are produced in their local area, rather than imported goods.

What are the reasons for this?

Is this a positive or a negative trend?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In today's modern world, a shift has been noticed in consumers. They prefer to buy local goods rather than the one imported from other countries. This shift can be positive for developing nations whereas negative for the developed economies.

Firstly, buying local produce decreases the cost as it exempt from any import duties and huge profits. Secondly, it empowers a nation and helps in its development. This also reduces trade deficit of a country and boosts the economy. A classic example of this is China which exports to the world as is the largest producer because its citizens prefer to buy local goods and make nation industry sustainable. Lastly, this is biggest solution to unemployment. More sale requires more production which in turn needs more workers. 'MAKE IN INDIA' is a perfect explanation for this.

On the other hand, it impacts developed nations as their consumes are depleting. Their income will decline and their industries will suffer. Indian consumers prefers TCS rather than depending on any American provider. Therefore, IT industry of America suffered after the software revolution happened in India. Along with that, the quality of produce decreased as local manufacturers cannot match the international standards. This becomes a serious concern in terms of electrical and heating appliances.

At last, this trend is changing the way world's economy looks like. Some countries are expanding becoming suppliers whereas others are loosing to be the sole providers. Therefore, the most benefited of this situation is the consumer who has variety of options to choose from and at different rates.
