Student answer (Band 6.5)

In this day and age, purchasing goods and services has become particularly a salient aspect in one’s life. One can’t be oblivious to the fact that there is a growing trend of buying goods from domestic country instead of imported goods. Personally, I believe that this is a positive trend as it not only helps the economic growth but also helps to reduce the environmental problems.

There are several reasons for this increasing trend. First and foremost, people firmly believe that the products that grow in their own home country have less preservatives and turns to be more fresher as compared to the ones that are transported with lots of emissions. Apart from this, if they buy the local goods, country can economically grow more. For instance, when domestic products are purchased by the consumers , a large proportion of money remains within the country.

While imported products can provide greater variety, there is no denying to the fact that this is the positive trend because stronger demand of local goods stimulates the economic growth. Moreover, there is a less environmental damage. For instance, no imported goods ultimately means that there is no transportation of goods through air, road and water which in turn helps to reduce the associated emissions.

To recapitulate. Although imported goods are sometimes more cheaper, I still believe that people should continue to buy more products from their home countries to increase the economic development. The world will surely be a better place to live in if there is less environmental damage.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the reasons for the trend and the writer's opinion on whether it is positive or negative. The position is clear from the introduction and maintained throughout. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the explanation regarding 'less preservatives' is brief, and the economic argument could be more deeply explored with specific examples beyond general statements. While the task is fully addressed, the supporting points lack the depth required for a higher band score, as they tend to repeat the same points about economic growth and environmental benefits rather than expanding on them with nuanced analysis.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the reasons from the evaluation of the trend. Cohesive devices such as 'First and foremost', 'Apart from this', and 'To recapitulate' are used to guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the flow between sentences could be smoother. For example, the transition in the third paragraph ('While imported products can provide greater variety, there is no denying to the fact...') is a bit clunky. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear, but the use of cohesive devices lacks the flexibility and sophistication of higher bands.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'salient' and 'oblivious', which are used correctly. However, there are instances of awkward word choice and collocation errors, such as 'more fresher' (a double comparative) and 'more cheaper' (also a double comparative). These errors do not impede communication but indicate a lack of precision. To reach a higher band, the writer should focus on using more sophisticated collocations and avoiding redundant comparative structures.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the writer attempts complex sentences, there are several grammatical inaccuracies. Notable errors include 'purchasing goods... has become particularly a salient aspect' (word order), 'products that grow in their own home country' (should be 'are grown'), and 'there is a less environmental damage' (article usage). Additionally, the punctuation in the final paragraph ('To recapitulate.') is incorrect as it creates a sentence fragment. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding the message, they occur frequently enough to limit the score to a 6.0.
