Student answer (Band 6.5)

Nowadays, people prefer purchasing items produced by their local area, rather than imported goods. In my opinion, it is a positive trend and I will discuss the reasons in upcoming paragraphs.

First and foremost, the main cause of people preference to shop local item is that they are cheap in price. In other words, shoppers do not have to pay for shipping or custom charges. For example, when any country sell their commodities in other nation, they have to pay tariffs so, seller nation increase the amount of product which cost much to shoppers as compared to local merchandise.

Secondly, individual will know the quality of locally manufactured products. To elaborate, when any item such as clothes, furniture or household things are produced in local factories, manufacturer has always concern to provide best excellence to attract native residents. For example, according to survey published in Canadian newspaper, 75% public shown interest in shopping locally as they have more trust in items made domestically because either they know the owner or its easy to return.

On the other hand, it is also beneficial for growth of local community. It boost the confidence of industries to sell their goods local and aids to increase their business. Apart from this, this positive trend encourage more and more companies to build their factories which helps to generate more jobs and generate revenues rather than depending on other countries for their items.

To conclude, spending money on local produced goods help grow community-based businesses as well as save money of the residents. In my thoughts, purchasing from local vendors who manufacture by themselves is advantageous for people as well as for country.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt: it identifies reasons for the trend (cost and quality) and provides a clear opinion that it is a positive development. The ideas are relevant and generally well-supported, such as the mention of shipping costs and the economic benefits for local communities. However, some arguments could be further extended; for instance, the explanation of why local goods are cheaper could be more nuanced, as local production is not always cheaper than mass-produced imports. The position is consistent throughout the essay, and the conclusion effectively summarizes the main points.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central topic, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'First and foremost', 'Secondly', and 'On the other hand', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and there are minor issues with referencing and sentence-level cohesion, such as in the sentence 'For example, when any country sell their commodities in other nation'. Despite these minor flaws, the overall structure is coherent and paragraphing is appropriate.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The range of vocabulary is adequate for the task. The student uses some topic-specific terms like 'commodities', 'tariffs', 'merchandise', and 'domestically'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'people preference' (should be 'people's preference'), 'provide best excellence' (should be 'provide high quality'), and 'save money of the residents' (should be 'save residents money'). While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the essay from reaching a higher band. A more varied and precise vocabulary would enhance the quality of the arguments.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'any country sell', 'manufacturer has always concern') and article usage (e.g., 'in other nation', 'according to survey'). Punctuation is generally functional, though there are minor issues with spacing and phrasing. The errors are noticeable but do not significantly impede the reader's understanding. To improve, the student should focus on mastering basic grammatical rules like pluralization and the correct use of articles.
